The Coalition said on Oct. 12, 2026 that a DDoS attack aimed at Gears of War: E-Day’s online services caused intermittent disconnects and login problems for players.

Players reported difficulty joining multiplayer matches and said connections dropped after they entered a game. The disruption occurred during the game’s first weekend after its launch on Oct. 6, 2026 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Alinea Analytics estimated that Gears of War: E-Day sold roughly 230,000 copies in its first week and that about 1.7 million players accessed the title via Xbox Game Pass. The Coalition is a studio owned by Microsoft, and Xbox has undergone layoffs that have affected multiple studios and led to reorganizations.

Mike Crump, head of The Coalition, told the BBC that the team focuses on what it can control, such as shipping a great game, and that layoffs are outside its control. The Coalition and Microsoft have outlined a DLC roadmap covering five seasons, holiday‑themed limited‑time events, and a season 2 release in December described as a love letter to the franchise. Eurogamer noted that January saw DDoS attacks on Arc Raiders and The Finals, and that similar attacks appeared to target Final Fantasy 14.
