Yahoo Tech reported that the Steam listing for Wonder Boy in Monster Land uses the one-word title ‘Wonderboy’ instead of the correct two-word ‘Wonder Boy’. The listing identifies Retro Maniac as developer and publisher, noting the company has only one other Steam game, the 1994 Data East title Street Hoop (also known as Street Slam). LAT Corp holds the intellectual property of the original Wonder Boy games from Westone Bit Entertainment, while Sega owns the Wonder Boy trademark, requiring both approvals for any re‑release using the name.

The Wonder Boy Universe account on X raised concerns on September 28, 2026, calling the Retro Maniac port illegitimate and noting its absence from the Japanese Steam store. Composer Shinichi Sakamoto affirmed the port is illegitimate, said it’s not available in Japan, and claimed that users had downloaded it 10,000 times on Steam. A purchaser who bought the Steam version reported it’s a ROM running in the MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) arcade emulator with the Sega logo splash screen removed, and received a prompt refund after requesting one.

Comparisons with footage from the YouTube channel Retro Fighters show the Retro Maniac version lacks the Sega logo splash screen present in the original arcade ROM. According to Valve’s documentation, a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) complaint is processed within a maximum of 72 hours, though it may take longer for complex cases, and a filed complaint results in a public notice on the Steam page stating ‘A DMCA takedown notice has been filed on this item’. As of the time of writing, no such DMCA notice had appeared on the Steam page for Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and the Yahoo Tech article observes that the ease with which a rip‑off Wonder Boy game can be uploaded to Steam in 2026 signals a weakness in quality control for recent Steam releases.
