Greg Zeschuk, BioWare’s co-founder, spoke publicly for the first time about the studio’s end in an Oct. 29, 2026 interview with 80 Level. He said the acquisition of Electronic Arts by Saudi Arabia’s PIF for $55 billion was the final nail in the coffin for the studio.
On Oct. 21, 2026, Electronic Arts said it would shut down BioWare and close its Edmonton office, ending roughly 30 years of operation. The shutdown eliminated about 50 positions at BioWare within roughly 400 company-wide layoffs. The closure letter was called Building EA’s Next Chapter. Cam Weber, President and Chief Studios Officer, and David Tinson, President and Chief Operating Officer, signed it.
Bloomberg supplied the headcount estimate. It put company-wide cuts at roughly 400 positions and BioWare cuts at about 50. EA’s staff memo did not include specific layoff numbers.
The same announcement ended early work on the next Mass Effect game. The project, known internally as Mass Effect: Universe and to the public as Mass Effect 5, is canceled. It was revealed at The Game Awards in 2020. The game stayed in early development for roughly six years before Electronic Arts canceled it on Oct. 21, 2026.
BioWare had a small team working on the project. Electronic Arts decided not to move forward.
Electronic Arts plans to run fewer large-scale action-adventure projects at the same time. The focus will include Marvel’s Iron Man, the next Star Wars Jedi game, Battlefield, Apex Legends, and EA SPORTS titles. EA said every action-adventure game demands full commitment. The publisher is preparing a new title co-developed by Respawn and DICE.
Some speculation points to a new Star Wars Battlefront entry.
The closure came after EA’s August 2026 go-private deal. A group led by Saudi Arabia’s PIF and Silver Lake bought EA for $55 billion. The deal added about $18 billion in debt. EA had committed to $700 million in annual cost reductions.
Inven Global reported that industry observers saw BioWare as the top restructuring candidate before EA finished going private. That expectation came before the August 2026 deal. “BioWare is a legendary studio that helped define the RPG genre, and we do not take this decision lightly,” Weber and Tinson said.
BioWare said goodbye on its official X account. The message thanked players and listed major franchises across three decades: Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem. “What generations of BioWare built together is something to celebrate and remember,” the studio said. It described fans who debated choices and bonded with characters as the story’s most meaningful part.
Zeschuk told 80 Level that his beer brewing business is going well. He said he feels no sentiment or nostalgia about BioWare’s closure. He said the closure saddens him most for Edmonton. BioWare had shown that something special could be accomplished somewhere not previously known for game development.
He called the studio a beacon of hope and possibility. “It’s actually, in some ways, saddest for the city of Edmonton, where we’re from, because we were kind of this beacon of hope,” Zeschuk said.

Zeschuk said executives without development experience do not understand how game development works. He rejected the idea that great games can be recreated with random people and AI. “There’s this weird belief that you can just kind of recreate great games with random people and AI. It doesn’t work,” Zeschuk said.
Zeschuk rejected the claim that BioWare was struggling before EA bought it in 2007. He said the studio was healthy at the time. It was also raising money for Star Wars: The Old Republic. He expressed concern for displaced BioWare employees facing a hostile job market.
Zeschuk said he and Ray Muzyka departed BioWare on their own terms in 2012. That exit came several months after Mass Effect 3 launched. He had already processed his emotions about the studio well before its 2026 closure.
Zeschuk said BioWare’s ability to ship games was still a success. The studio operated within Electronic Arts’ framework. He framed weaker titles as an achievement given the publisher’s constraints. He made the point in his 80 Level interview.
Joe Smith launched the #SaveMassEffect petition on Change.org on Oct. 21, 2026. That was the day EA announced BioWare’s closure. Fans pushed the total past 200,000 signatures. The page listed 210,934 verified signatures by Oct. 27, 2026, including 38,732 added in one day.
The campaign was promoted by Change.org from its official X account. The date was Oct. 23, 2026. The petition asks EA to provide funding and staff for a new Mass Effect game. It also suggests licensing the IP to another studio.
Reopening BioWare is not part of the request.
The publisher has not responded to the #SaveMassEffect petition. Its Global Town Hall to discuss the restructuring is scheduled for November 2026. Electronic Arts still owns the Mass Effect and Dragon Age IP. The franchises could be sold separately or handed to external developers.
EA disclosed no details about the Mass Effect TV series at Amazon. It also gave no information on operational support for BioWare’s existing games. The staff letter named no plans for the Mass Effect franchise.
