The original game released in 1998, and the Thief Gold re-release arrived in 1999. The remaster packages the original game, the Gold update, and the all-new narrative campaign The Tarnished Mirror together.

The remaster includes Thief: The Dark Project with 12 missions across environments, plus the Thief: Gold update. The Thief: Gold update adds three new missions that deepen the plot and introduces five new types of enemies.

You control Garrett, an orphan taken in by the Keepers and trained as a Master Thief. The Keepers trained Garrett to become a Master Thief.

Originally developed by Looking Glass Studios, Thief: The Dark Project was the first stealth title to use light and sound as important gameplay mechanics. The game was the first stealth game to use light and sound as mechanics to help players hide from and sneak up on characters rather than simply attacking them. Looking Glass Studios created the original game before Nightdive Studios remastered it with the KEX Engine.

The remaster adds The Tarnished Mirror, an all-new narrative campaign made by the acclaimed creators of Thief: The Black Parade, one of the most ambitious fan-made expansions in PC gaming history. The standalone story takes place between Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age. It begins with a seemingly ordinary theft before Garrett becomes involved in events centered on an ancient city inspired by Lovecraftian horror. The campaign steadily introduces new factions, environments, and Lovecraftian horror while preserving the identity of the remaster.

Nightdive and Eidos-Montreal are welcoming the community creation directly into official canon through The Tarnished Mirror. Nightdive and Eidos-Montreal incorporate the new campaign into the series’ official continuity. The remaster is compatible with player-created mods, including The Black Parade, and will continue supporting community-created modifications.

The remaster uses Nightdive Studios’ KEX Engine and supports up to 4K resolution and 120 frames per second on compatible hardware. Visual improvements include updated textures, models, and animations. The game also includes Trophies, and modern controls include a weapon wheel, rumble, and motion or gyro controls.

Quality-of-life improvements include a weapon and item wheel for quickly selecting tools and gadgets and a mission selector to replay completed missions. A Vault contains behind-the-scenes material.

Nintendo Switch owners can upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition for free. A new release date trailer for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered was revealed. GamingBolt states Thief: The Dark Project Remastered will launch on December 4th.
