Caves of Qud: Diaspora will launch as the first early access DLC on Steam. Freehold Games developed Diaspora and Kitfox Games publishes it. It will debut in Steam Early Access on Dec. 9, 2026. The DLC will cost $14.99 USD.
Valve manually adjusted Steam’s backend to enable early‑access DLC for Caves of Qud: Diaspora. Steam’s store page initially flagged the early‑access DLC listing as a bug. Tanya X. Short, co‑founder of Kitfox Games, said she was initially hesitant about releasing the expansion as early access. Tanya X. Short said Jason Grinblat and Brian Bucklew were keen to continue the successful early‑access development strategy used for the base game.
Freehold Games stated that Caves of Qud is complicated with many interlocking systems. The studio said Diaspora will add a new layer that needs community stress testing. Freehold Games said its development is slow. The studio said they do not want a timeline that forces compromise.
Freehold Games said early access lets them fund the expansion as it progresses. Caves of Qud entered Steam Early Access in July 2015 and remained there until its 1.0 release in 2024. Freehold Games began development on Caves of Qud in 2007. Brian Bucklew and Jason Grinblat love working with players and already have the processes to develop DLC via early access.
