Unknown Worlds revealed Early Access 2.0 for Subnautica 2 with no release date set, according to reports published Oct. 21, 2026 by Kotaku and Oct. 20, 2026 by ComicBook.com. The Subnautica 2 Steam page says the game will be in Early Access for around two to three years, so the original timeline is not being delayed for EA 2.0.
Creative Director Anthony Gallegos called it the most substantial update to Subnautica 2 since release. Kotaku reported that Unknown Worlds revealed the update in a video on Subnautica’s YouTube channel last week, calling it the game’s biggest update yet after earlier significant early access patches. Gallegos promised more EA 2.0 content details through a vlog series that will include talks with other development team members. Kotaku said the initial announcement vlog offered relatively few peeks at the new content.
Early Access 2.0 adds a story expansion, new creatures, a five-biome region, and the Tadpole chassis with arms and legs to Subnautica 2. The new region includes sub-area biomes called Tar Flats, Tar Trenches, and Great Jaw Farms. New story content ties to Cicada’s colonists and other beings. The update also adds blueprints for the Frog, a mini-mech suit with robotic arms and legs suited for exploring the new dark region.
Early Access 2.0 plans Active and Passive Biomods, reworks some existing ones, and makes the Fins item’s Dash ability a permanent passive trait. The Collector Leviathan’s behavior will change, and the update adds new base building options. ComicBook.com said the Leviathan change and new region center the update on a more frightful tone.
ComicBook.com described Early Access 2.0 as the first big sign that Subnautica 2 is moving toward an eventual 1.0 release. ComicBook.com said Gallegos shared an image of the region and called it the scariest the developers have ever done for the series. The outlet said more videos in the Voyage to EA2 journey will showcase additional elements.
Some players feel frustrated that Early Access 2.0 has no release date, and Kotaku said that likely means the full release is still far away. Player feedback shaped the update’s content, which brings back the long-beloved round room base component. Kotaku noted most players seemed excited about the news despite frustration from a few others.
Both Subnautica and Subnautica 2 feature fear-inducing moments from exploring and surviving aquatic alien worlds with terrifying wildlife. Subnautica 2’s high popularity has drawn mixed reception, with some players reviving the old complaint that they cannot fight more violent creatures. ComicBook.com said new wildlife violence creates tense moments during exploration. The outlet said this followed launch and that the update broadens a world limited by the game’s initial scope.
Unknown Worlds released the Buddy system update, version 1.2, on August 19, 2026, adding Proximity Chat, Player Trading and Revives, and an all-new Tracking Tag. Anthony Gallegos said proximity chat adds tension because voices become radio-like and break up as players move farther apart. Kotaku reported that Unknown Worlds has delivered significant updates since early access launched earlier this year, including a buddy system and a controversial way to fight aggressive fish.
Update 1.2 added player revives, letting a friend share oxygen to bring a downed player back to life. The patch also added two new player characters, Grace and Jegna, plus two new suit colors for multiplayer. Gallegos told IGN the team supports players looking identical but wants more options and will keep adding them during early access. The Tracking Tag extends a dead player’s black box signal—a locator beacon from a downed player’s gear—to help recover lost items, and IGN said the tag is a short-range beacon that players can throw in the environment or store in a portable locker.
Earlier, Update 1.1 Adaptive Measures expanded biomods by adding new biolabs earlier in Subnautica 2. It changed the Sonic Resonator so fish stuns are clearer while leaving out direct attacks on dangerous fish. VICE said some players had hoped for direct attacks, and the update also covered bug fixes, balance tuning, and optimization.
Beyond update 1.2, Unknown Worlds plans to add new regions, biomes, creatures, and eventually the next chapter of the story. The roadmap also planned update 1.2 as a co-op centric release with voice chat, emotes, player trading, player revive, and customizations.
Players and critics have given Subnautica 2 positive feedback, and sales are incredibly strong compared to other early access games. The game currently offers early access play on PC and Xbox Series platforms. Its early access period had been live for around two months as of July 9, 2026, and VICE said the team had been gathering feedback since launch and working on core gameplay improvements. VICE reported these plans after noting Subnautica 2 had positive feedback and strong early access sales.
