Rockstar Games announced that Grand Theft Auto VI will launch on November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X platforms. The team responsible for art assets increased from five to six developers who worked on Grand Theft Auto V, reaching 65 people, a tenfold increase. Rockstar devoted eight years to developing Grand Theft Auto VI, delaying work as the studio focused on completing Red Dead Redemption 2; once that game launched, Grand Theft Auto VI turned into the studio’s main priority.

The game experienced three delays, moving from an initial 2025 target, then May 2026, and later November 2026 following staff skepticism about the earlier date. Rockstar leadership thought the internal goal was a 2025 release, although staff on the ground remained skeptical of that timeline. Work on Grand Theft Auto VI did not start right after Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013; the original idea was to develop GTA VI and Red Dead Redemption 2 at the same time. Jennifer Kolbe noted that crunch reports during Grand Theft Auto VI’s development were imperfect, yet an improvement over the crunch seen in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar has not revealed the number of artists on the Red Dead Redemption 2 art team, but said it was much smaller than the 65‑person team handling Grand Theft Auto VI’s art. Rockstar stated that Grand Theft Auto VI represents a significant upgrade over Grand Theft Auto V, surpassing expectations due to the 13‑year gap and the outdated hardware used for GTA V.

Rockstar grew its workforce from 2,441 employees in 12 offices worldwide in 2018 to about 4,711 workers by October 2026. Polygon.com observes that the studio’s growth shows expansion despite industry contractions, meaning it surpasses all direct competitors.

Jason Schreier claims that Grand Theft Auto VI is the costliest game ever made, pointing to its large workforce and years of development, even though Rockstar has not confirmed a $1.5 billion budget. Jennifer Kolbe, Rockstar’s head of publishing, rejected the claim that the game’s budget exceeded $1.5 billion, noting that amount equals the cost of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa.

Polygon.com notes that Schreier said Rockstar dismissed rumors of a $1.5 billion budget—like the Burj Khalifa’s cost—but still regards Grand Theft Auto VI as the most expensive game because of its scale and length of development. Grand Theft Auto VI will favor the realism seen in Red Dead Redemption 2 over the absurdity found in Grand Theft Auto V, targeting a prestige TV‑worthy narrative while still permitting over‑the‑top moments.

The project’s early codename was Project Americas, which reflected a plan to cover extensive areas of North and South America before attention shifted to the Miami region. Polygon.com observed that, despite online rumors of in‑game cocaine use and nudity, it anticipates that Grand Theft Auto VI will tell a prestige TV‑worthy story centered on the Bonnie‑and‑Clyde‑inspired characters Jason and Lucia.

The game uses traditional artificial intelligence systems, unlike ChatGPT‑style, to manage non‑playable character (NPC) behavior, driven by the necessity to model how the relationship between Jason and Lucia evolves. The goal of assigning distinct behaviors to each non‑playable character caused at least one delay, after projections indicated the workload would surpass original estimates. Rob Nelson described the projections for the workload required to give each NPC in Grand Theft Auto VI unique behavior as ‘horrifying’.

Rob Nelson noted that developing AI systems to model the Jason‑Lucia relationship caused concern, although supporters maintained the feature was essential. Development lead Rob Nelson called a stage of Grand Theft Auto VI’s creation a ‘dark period’ because the game’s direction was still unclear.

VICE pointed out that creating a virtual nightclub requires animating and scripting every patron, producing drinks, adding music, designing lighting and layering many details to achieve authenticity. Phil Hooker of Rockstar stated that Grand Theft Auto VI is never finalized, as the team continues to make adjustments months before release, yet this does not imply the game is incomplete or missing features.

Game Rant stated that Grand Theft Auto VI will use a chapter‑based structure akin to Red Dead Redemption 2, helping to pace the story while still allowing players to deviate from the main path.

Grand Theft Auto VI offers a far more interactive experience than GTA V, featuring more enterable structures, expanded activities, increased NPC engagement, and many small details that bring the world to life. Rockstar indicated that there is no announced PC version or GTA Online for Grand Theft Auto VI, meaning the launch will include only the single‑player campaign.

Phil Hooker remarked that the engine, tools, and workforce developed for Grand Theft Auto VI will allow the studio to launch upcoming titles at a faster pace. Aaron Garbut noted that the team made fundamental changes to many parts of the Grand Theft Auto VI project and will not dismantle it.

Rumors suggest that Grand Theft Auto VI might get a PC release in early 2027, and that Rockstar could launch story‑based DLC after launch, following the model used for Bully and Manhunt. Reports state that Grand Theft Auto VI will reach PC platforms in the first quarter of 2027, shortly following its console debut.
