Rockstar said Grand Theft Auto VI’s world moves more slowly than Grand Theft Auto V’s, lengthening sunsets and nighttime to support Vice City’s detail, Kotaku reported Oct. 29, 2026.
Rockstar North co-head and development head Rob Nelson told EDGE magazine that everything felt too fast when the company tested Grand Theft Auto VI using Grand Theft Auto V’s time-and-day systems and gameplay speed. Nelson explained that as world resolution increases, some behaviors that barely worked in Grand Theft Auto V no longer work, such as pedestrians failing to react when a weapon appears out of nowhere. “Everything felt too fast,” Nelson explained.
Before rebuilding Vice City, Rockstar visited Miami on many occasions to catalog specific aspects of the city and its culture for research. The research excursions informed Rockstar’s reconstruction of Vice City based on the real city and its culture. Rockstar replaced the quick day-night cycle loop of previous games with a cycle that requires far more time to pass through, producing longer nights and sunsets because time physically moves slower.
Grand Theft Auto VI non-player characters are more reactive than Grand Theft Auto V pedestrians, who would not react unless someone aimed a weapon at them. In Grand Theft Auto VI, players can summon cars through the Scooter Bros app for a modest fee, but the service is not instantaneous; after a few seconds a driver arrives in the car before riding off on a scooter. Grand Theft Auto VI lets players store an arsenal of weapons in a car trunk but prevents them from carrying every weapon on their person.
Grand Theft Auto VI introduces enforced downtime, including raising cash for a new job, to stop players from rushing through the main story at an unrealistic pace. Players cannot immediately jump from one mission to the next. Instead, requirements such as raising cash for a new job create enforced downtime that slows progression. Rockstar is emphasizing realism over the at-times arcade-y design of prior games so that pacing matches the visual fidelity developed over years.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will release worldwide on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The game was originally slated for 2025, then pushed to May 26, 2026, and then again to November 19, 2026.
Thirteen years had passed since Grand Theft Auto V launched as of Aug. 26, 2026, making Grand Theft Auto 6 one of the most long-awaited video games in history. The initial Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer was released in December 2023, followed by a second official trailer in May 2025. Rockstar said in its Aug. 26, 2026 statement that everyone involved remains very excited about the extended look scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. ET on Netflix.
IGN reporter Wesley Yin-Poole reported Tuesday that 14 gameplay videos had been leaked, with recent videos showing a nightclub, beach and video game store. A social media account named CyberLeek posted videos of what appeared to be a full Grand Theft Auto 6 build, including one of an airplane flying through downtown Vice City. Rockstar released a statement on Aug. 26, 2026 calling the gameplay leaks heartbreaking for the development team. OutKick reported that Rockstar remained silent for nearly a week after CyberLeek’s leaks before issuing the statement.

Rockstar announced that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be released solely as a digital game with no physical disc, a decision that angered some fans. Every standard retail copy of Grand Theft Auto 6 will reportedly include a physical collector’s map.
Grand Theft Auto VI will feature hundreds of enterable interiors that can be interacted with to various degrees, though Rockstar has not provided an exact number. Grand Theft Auto 5 launched with about 70 to 80 enterable interiors. The previous Vice City game contained about 20 enterable interiors, none of which were really interactive. Hundreds of enterable interiors would set a new industry record, with no other game in the same ballpark as Grand Theft Auto 6.

Robberies are a major focus of Grand Theft Auto 6, requiring many enterable interiors for protagonists Jason and Lucia to rob. It is unclear whether every enterable interior that could hypothetically be robbed will actually be robable. Grand Theft Auto 6’s open world is not expected to be substantially bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto 5; Rockstar is expanding the game through more layers, depth, and realism instead of empty space.
Rockstar updated its Mod Guidelines on Sept. 21, 2026 as Grand Theft Auto 6 approached release. The guidelines prohibit mods that expand or modify official storylines, plots, missions, characters, or other elements of established continuity. They also prohibit total conversions that combine maps, locations, characters, storylines, in-game assets, or other intellectual property from one Rockstar title into another.
Rockstar’s guidelines prohibit mods promoting self-harm, containing pornography, or engaging in or promoting conflict role-play or military simulations depicting real-world armed organizations. Rockstar permits mod monetization only through digital storefront providers approved by the company and in compliance with all applicable laws.
The Creator Platform License Agreement blocks trading rights for real-world money, covering fiat currency, assets, crypto currency and crypto assets. The agreement also bans other money-making methods and states the list is not exhaustive. The updated Mod Guidelines and Creator Platform License Agreement apply to all Rockstar games, not just Grand Theft Auto 6.
