Sony began notifying U.S. PlayStation 5 owners in early November 2026 that they can trade in a standard console with two DualSense controllers for up to $400 in cash sent to a bank account, handled through Back Market.
PlayStation delivered the alerts through the app and console notification feed, and ResetEra user Jay_Horror first spotted the messages. The notice takes the player to Back Market’s evaluation page to enter model, storage, condition and accessories. The notifications and dollar valuations apply only to players in the United States, and no similar offer has been confirmed for New Zealand or Australia. Sony has not confirmed the program’s full scope, minimum condition requirements, model-specific valuations, or whether it is open to all accounts, and no public deadline has been announced.
The novelty is that Sony is pushing the existing Back Market trade-in program directly to players’ phones after a 2024 partnership, rather than announcing a separate PS5-specific campaign. The maximum $400 payout requires a standard PS5 with two or more DualSense controllers in Grade 0, or pristine, condition, and applies to the complete package rather than the console alone, while lower grades and missing accessories reduce the offer. Back Market’s U.S. Digital Edition ceiling is up to $380, and actual values hinge on disc drive, physical condition, storage and bundled accessories.

Once an owner accepts a quote, they must transfer data and ship the device free within 21 days, and Back Market promises direct deposit within five business days after inspection. Back Market’s quoted value can change after the company physically inspects the shipped hardware.
The timing lands ahead of Grand Theft Auto 6, which launches November 19, eight days before Black Friday on November 27. Sony says it is not trying to sell a new console but to put a previously sold machine back into circulation so another owner can spend on the PS Store. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella said on Bluesky that evidence of a GTA 6 hardware sales boost has not yet materialized despite strong pre-orders.
Microsoft acted first, emailing U.S. Xbox Series X|S owners in October through Best Buy to trade in neglected consoles for up to $375. That offer pays up to $375 for units in excellent condition with the power cable, controller and stand included, while units in poor condition land around $150. Microsoft raised Xbox prices in August 2026, citing storage and memory costs that had more than doubled and could double again by autumn 2027.
GameStop offers only up to $275 in store credit for some PS5 models, making Sony’s cash ceiling look more attractive though values vary by model. A non-digital PS5 with one DualSense in decent condition sells on eBay for $450 to $500, and after fees the net is roughly the same as Sony’s offer.
Regular PS5s currently sell for around $600 to $650 depending on the disc drive, while the PS5 Pro lists at $900, above the original $500 launch price. Sony’s base PS5 models remain relatively well stocked unlike the PS5 Pro, which faces component shortages and sells above its $899.99 MSRP, with used Pro consoles listed for as much as $1,400 on secondary markets ahead of GTA 6.
Sony raised PS5 prices effective April 2, 2026, lifting the disc PS5 to $649.99, the Digital Edition to $599.99 and the PS5 Pro to $899.99, the second increase in under twelve months. Component shortages have made the PS5 Pro hard to find at retail, with PlayStation Direct listing it unavailable in late October and used units trading above list price. Analysts link the tighter component supply to demand for memory and storage chips from artificial intelligence data centers.
Circana data shared by Mat Piscatella shows U.S. PlayStation console sales fell 25 percent in the year through August 2026, the lowest since 2013, while the average price paid for a PlayStation console rose to $597, up 20 percent in a year. “Both prices are at all-time US highs. Price sensitivity is becoming a real problem,” said Mat Piscatella, via Circana. Xbox dropped 33 percent to an all-time low for the brand over the same period.
Sony has acknowledged it prioritizes monetizing existing users over acquiring new hardware customers, with lower-priced refurbished units potentially expanding the ecosystem and driving PlayStation Plus subscriptions. Sony has not explained why it launched the PS5 trade-in push, with possible reasons including restocking second-hand stock, easing hardware shortages, and returning dormant consoles to circulation.
The Back Market tie-up dates to a 2024 partnership centered on PS4 owners under the Trade In & Trade Up offer. Sony’s existing PS4 program offers up to $150 for a PS4 plus a $50 voucher redeemable toward a PS5, PS5 Pro, bundle or PS VR2 on PlayStation Direct and runs until December 31, 2026. Nobody has reported a voucher attached to the PS5 offer.
O Santuário Geek reports that Sony and Microsoft are expected to widen the reach of their console trade-in notifications. GameStop and Best Buy may respond with trade-in bonuses of their own around the November 19 GTA 6 launch and November 27 Black Friday.
