Microsoft unveiled a redesigned Xbox app for PC, web, and cloud gaming on November 5, 2026, promising that the PC client launches up to 60% faster than before. The company announced the overhaul through Xbox Wire, framing it as a broader refresh that also touches web browsers, supported TVs, and virtual reality headsets, and presenting it as a way to make Xbox easier to use across devices rather than tying it to a single console. The updated app became available to Xbox Insiders starting November 5, 2026, through the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC. Microsoft has not announced a general release date for all users.

Jason Beaumont, VP of Xbox Experiences, announced the changes in an Xbox Wire blog post on November 5, 2026. Xbox chief Asha Sharma shared a video on X the same day comparing the previous app with the new build and describing the improvement as meaningful. Her message paired the video with a statement that more work remains ahead.

Microsoft’s own testing shows Home, Store, and Xbox Game Pass pages load up to 50% faster, and windows inside the app open up to 65% faster. The company cautions that the figures come from internal testing and may vary depending on a user’s device, internet connection, system configuration, and usage. It also describes 60% as an upper limit rather than a guaranteed result for every player.

The main navigation now includes friends and social tools, so users can view friend activity, start conversations, or enter parties without extra steps. Moving those tools into the main navigation aims to make social interaction more visible while browsing. The library redesign adds simpler navigation, fresh filters, and new game organization options to make browsing easier.

A single search box surfaces games, installed titles, add-ons, and people together instead of requiring separate searches. The improved search brings together results from across Xbox, so players can find games on the Xbox Store or Xbox Game Pass more quickly. Visual updates cover game cards, Home, Settings, and animations, and players can pick dark or light display modes. The refreshed look aims to make the app easier to scan and navigate, and the dark and light mode choice gives players control over the display appearance.

The app also offers dark and light modes plus five high-contrast visual options. The five high-contrast options join dark and light themes to give players more ways to customize the experience to their preferences. Desktop mode makes better use of larger screens on PCs and larger displays.

Microsoft is bringing the refreshed design and navigation to Xbox cloud gaming apps on supported TVs and VR headsets. The cloud gaming apps will adopt the same look and navigation basics, though Microsoft notes each screen format needs its own design. The goal is for finding games, knowing what is playable, and getting in quickly to feel consistent everywhere.

The cloud gaming Library tab unifies owned titles and Game Pass streaming games, allowing sorting and filtering by recently played titles, genre, and input type. The new Library tab collects every game a player can stream, whether they own it or reach it through Game Pass.

The PC app rivals Steam and the Epic Games Store for the attention of computer gamers. Microsoft said PC gaming is growing even as its console business faces difficulties, motivating investment in the Xbox PC app.

In September 2025, an update let users view Steam, Epic Games, GOG, and other launcher libraries inside the Xbox app. That earlier step shows a longer trend of making the Xbox app a central place for PC games regardless of storefront. Windows Central examined an early build known internally as Garrison before Microsoft revealed the redesign publicly, giving outside observers a sense of the redesign’s direction before the official announcement.

Windows Central said the Garrison build loads large game collections more quickly, which is a major step forward for handhelds such as the Xbox ROG Ally. The faster library loading is especially relevant for devices like the Xbox ROG Ally, where app performance has been a limitation, and the report frames this as a meaningful improvement for Windows handheld users.

Microsoft polished the Game Mode full-screen interface for easier controller navigation; it can act as a default home screen on PCs connected to televisions. TweakTown says the polished Game Mode also points toward future use on Windows handhelds. The app helps distinguish installable games from titles requiring streaming through Xbox Cloud Gaming, a distinction that matters for players managing storage and connectivity on handheld and PC devices.

Cloud gaming operates only in a limited set of countries, and a referenced 29-country list omits the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt. Dubai Press reported in October 2026 that the UAE is not supported.

Microsoft plans to enable the updated play.xbox.com experience for more players automatically over the coming weeks, following an Insider preview that started earlier in 2026. Xbox stated that there is more work ahead and that user input will guide future changes to the app. The company said it has heard where the experience could be better and that feedback will continue to shape what comes next, pointing to an iterative update process rather than a one-time release.

Interested users can install the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows and join the Insider program, while Xbox has not set a wider release date. Pure Xbox said the app should reach everyone soon if Insider testing goes well, though Xbox itself has not provided a specific timeline for the general rollout.

The Epic Games Store rebuilt its launcher from the ground up and says it now boots five times faster. Tbreak Media frames the Xbox speed push as part of a broader race among PC game launchers to feel quicker, with Epic’s launcher rebuild offered as a parallel industry example of performance-focused updates.
