Linux handheld owners such as Steam Deck users currently need third-party tools like Heroic Games Launcher to reach their GOG libraries, because GOG Galaxy is not offered for Linux. GOG Galaxy stays limited to Windows and macOS, even though GOG’s web storefront already sells downloads of supported Linux games.
In July 2026, GOG confirmed that work on a native Linux Galaxy launcher was officially underway, though no release timeline had been shared yet. TweakTown and XDA reported the July confirmation after relaying remarks from GOG joint CEO Krzysztof Papliński to GamingOnLinux.
GOG joint CEO Krzysztof Papliński told GamingOnLinux that the company had hired a specialist for the Linux project and was actively exploring the best way to handle Linux support. “Linux continues to be one of the topics we hear the most about from our community,” Papliński said. Papliński said GOG was “actively exploring the best way to approach Linux support for GOG Galaxy.” TweakTown and XDA said GOG was investing time and resources into Linux support without sharing specific plans.
In January 2026, GOG advertised a Linux specialist role, calling Linux its next major frontier. The company wanted a senior engineer to redesign Galaxy’s architecture and tooling for the Linux platform.
Heroic Games Launcher and Lutris do not offer Galaxy features, such as playtime and achievement tracking, cloud saves, automatic updates, and a unified friends list that covers Steam, GOG, and Epic Games. GOG has not stated whether the Linux client will rely on a compatibility layer like Proton or Wine for Windows-only games. Proton and Wine are compatibility layers that let Linux systems run software built for Windows.
In late 2025, GOG co-founder Michał Kiciński reacquired the company from CD Projekt Red. The deal allowed GOG to return to niche video games, including retro PC titles, while still offering modern digital titles without imposing DRM on buyers. GOG’s catalog centers on retro PC games and modern digital titles sold without imposing digital rights management on customers.
XDA said GOG Galaxy allows PC players to reach all their PC games through a single app. XDA said GOG Galaxy might become the main method for Linux gamers to manage libraries and link to stores such as Steam in one place, much like the Xbox app.
