Infinity Ward confirmed that a planned PvE mode will not be included in Modern Warfare 4. The studio described the playlist that appeared in earlier builds as a developer build not meant for public release.

Activision and Infinity Ward described the revamped DMZ as the series’ definitive extraction shooter experience with persistent progression set in the Hajin Exclusion Zone. Joe Cecot called the mode an approachable, fun sandbox for combat, exploration and social play.

Infinity Ward noted that DMZ will feature a 70‑level progression system, a forward operating base, a firing range for loadout testing, and a 3D printer to craft items from loot. The mode includes an operator‑based system where players build and level up a character that can be permanently lost upon death, and lootable items can be lost if the operator dies or drops them.

DMZ will incorporate dynamic threat levels that rise with player noise and that players can reduce by stealthy play, with different areas of the map presenting varying danger from AI combatants, bosses and other players. Unlike the DMZ mode in Modern Warfare II, the DMZ in Modern Warfare 4 will not be free‑to‑play and will be available at launch for all players who own the game.

In DMZ, each operator deploys with a Tourniquet ability that allows a self‑revive. This ability leaves the player in a wounded state capping health at 100 HP instead of 150 until they use a medkit, and players can loot or print extra self‑revives.

Infinity Ward has pledged extensive post‑launch support for DMZ, including map changes and dynamic weather that varies by season. The studio said the mode will evolve over time based on player feedback.
