Matthew Ball debunked the rumor that Microsoft’s Xcloud (its cloud gaming service) had obtained exclusive streaming rights for Grand Theft Auto VI.
He stated that Microsoft will not stream the game exclusively nor make it available to PC. Thus, Grand Theft Auto VI will not be an Xbox Cloud exclusive for streaming and will not be playable via PC streaming.
Ball’s remarks suggest that the game will be accessible through other streaming services, presumably Sony’s cloud offering, and that only certain client devices can stream it. Microsoft introduced monthly usage caps on cloud streaming for Game Pass subscribers (Xbox Game Pass). The announcement of these caps elicited little response from consumers, indicating that few subscribers actively use or care about the cloud streaming feature.
Data center operators are now prioritizing rental of compute capacity to AI companies over subsidizing game streaming services. This shift highlights the shaky unit economics of cloud gaming and may represent the industry’s final opportunity to show streaming’s viability.
