Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney posted on X on Oct. 12, 2026, that the firm is undertaking a shift, relocating staff to prioritize AI acceleration.

Sweeney said the aim is not to keep the same output with fewer staff but to allow workers to create more and better results and to pass the benefits to every Unreal Engine team. Epic Games delayed an unannounced Marvel‑Star Wars crossover shooter originally set for March 2027, and the title now lacks a new release date.

Epic Games uses generative AI tools such as Anthropic’s Claude for coding and creates all artwork through full AI workflows in the AI‑first process (a development approach that prioritizes generative AI tools) for that shooter. In March 2026 Epic Games laid off over 1,000 developers, attributing the cuts to a downturn in Fortnite engagement that caused spending to exceed revenue.

Epic Games released an updated Epic Games Launcher built with generative AI (“vibe coding” (a method where AI generates code based on natural‑language prompts)), making it faster and more responsive and adding support for Windows, Mac, and a forthcoming Linux version. Epic Games, through its partnership with Disney stemming from a $1.5 billion investment in 2024, introduced an AI‑voiced Darth Vader into Fortnite in 2025 and, in summer 2026, added AI‑generated voices for three dozen Fortnite skins using recordings of consenting actors.

Sweeney replied to a user on X who questioned how the AI pivot (shift toward AI) aligns with the recent layoffs, saying many people wish development would return to 2016 conditions, but his responsibility is to design for the present and the near future. Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier noted that Epic’s effort to put AI workflows into Unreal Engine could affect many other studios that rely on the engine for their own games. Tim Sweeney said, just four years ago, that Epic Games would not ban non‑fungible tokens (NFTs), indicating his early support for emerging technologies.
