Alinea Analytics reported 1.3 million disc copies of Resident Evil Requiem sold on PlayStation 5, accounting for 15 percent of total revenue, with 30.2 percent attributed to PlayStation hardware. Physical sales for 007 First Light, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, and Crimson Desert totaled less than 30 percent of revenue, while Marvel’s Wolverine sold 800,000 disc units out of 2.6 million sales.

Ampere Analysis data cited by Christopher Dring showed 22 percent of Resident Evil Requiem’s US sales were physical through the end of June 2026, with regional shares above 55 percent in France and 51 percent in Japan. Physical sales reached 43 percent in Australia and 40 percent in the UK over the same period. Capcom profited from physical sales of the game in Japan and France.

Sony set a January 2028 deadline to end production of PlayStation discs, drawing criticism and backlash. Critics argue an all-digital future would eliminate PlayStation’s second-hand market.

Rhys Elliot said disc-based copies are more ingrained in Japan’s culture, where Pragmata shifted 44 percent of all copies on disc and Onimusha: Way of the Sword moved 44.1 percent physically. Sony’s Japan-exclusive black PlayStation 5 is a digital-only model that can be outfitted with a disc drive, which Elliot described as a nudge toward digital game purchases.

Digital games are more profitable than physical copies, and third-party physical games may make only half as much profit after licensing and manufacturing fees. Steam and the PlayStation Store take a cut from third-party digital game sales.

Square Enix said 90 percent of its games sold worldwide from April 1, 2026, to June 30, 2026, were digital, totaling 6.65 million digital units versus approximately 730,000 physical units. Resident Evil Requiem launched on Feb. 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S, marking the first day-one release across PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox hardware. Resident Evil Requiem is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB for intense violence, blood and gore, strong language, and in-game purchases.

The Verge’s Tom Warren reported GTA 6 preorders were heavily skewed toward PlayStation 5, setting off alarm bells at Redmond campus. Xbox chief strategy officer Matthew Ball told IGN that preorders were breaking records for Xbox and matching its console market share, but did not specify which records. PlayStation 5 is expected to get a sales boost this fall when GTA 6 arrives, with PlayStation exclusively featured in the game’s marketing.
