Microsoft claims the updated app starts up to 60 percent faster based on its own testing. Home, Store, and Game Pass pages load up to 50 percent faster in the updated app. In-app windows also open up to 65 percent faster in the updated app.

The Library now offers simpler navigation, updated filters, and new ways to organize games. Friends and social features moved into the main navigation to make it easier to see what friends are playing, start chats, and join parties. The search function now covers installed games, add-ons, and people together. The redesign also refreshes game cards, Home, Settings, and animations across the app.

Starting November 5, 2026, members of the Xbox Insiders program can try the updated app before it reaches everyone later. Insiders can download the updated app from the Microsoft Store and may need to select the Switch button to activate the redesign. Users must join the Xbox Insider Program through the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows.

Jason Beaumont, VP for Xbox Experiences, said Insiders could try the updated app starting that day. He added that user input would continue to guide future changes. Beaumont spoke on November 5, 2026, when Insider testing began.

Once installed, the older app experience might remain visible until users choose the Switch button located in the bottom-left corner. Microsoft first offered the refreshed web cloud gaming experience to Insiders in January 2026. The experience later expanded more broadly to players.

Microsoft is expanding the refreshed cloud gaming web experience to more players automatically over the coming weeks. People can try it now at play.xbox.com.

A new Library tab in the web experience lists cloud games available to play. The tab includes owned titles and Xbox Game Pass games, with filters for genres and input methods.

The web experience also adds a desktop mode for bigger screens. Customization choices include dark, light, and five high-contrast modes for the interface.

The updated design will also reach Xbox cloud gaming apps on supported televisions and VR headsets over the next few weeks. Supported smart TVs and VR headsets are included in the expansion.

On November 5, 2026, Microsoft had not confirmed a timeline for the TV and VR cloud gaming app rollout. It had also not said when all users would receive the PC app update.

Pure Xbox tested the new app on a Windows 10 desktop with 64GB of RAM and a first-generation ASUS ROG Ally, finding it faster than the current version on both devices. The current app takes a long time to boot on the ASUS ROG Ally in 15W Windows mode, and the update removes the need to switch to Performance or Turbo mode.

Cloud Gaming was removed from the left-hand navigation bar in the updated app, making it more awkward to access. Users must instead go through the library to launch cloud games. Launching a cloud game now requires going to the library page, opening a submenu, and choosing Play on Cloud.

Pure Xbox says early hands-on impressions are positive and that Xbox users online generally seem positive as well. The outlet formed these impressions after hands-on testing. The outlet reports initial teething problems, including hidden Cloud Gaming access and Remote Play tucked into a dropdown menu, but calls the update a good step in the right direction.

In September, Microsoft said it would limit cloud gaming hours for Game Pass subscribers and require them to buy more playtime. From this month, Game Pass Ultimate subscribers get 15 hours of cloud playtime each month, Premium subscribers get 10 hours, and Essential subscribers get 5 hours.

Xbox expects the cloud gaming hour cap change to affect 4 percent of Game Pass subscribers. The cap applies to Game Pass cloud gaming hours. The change is separate from the app speed update but appears in the same report.
