Kotaku and IGN reported that critics describe Modern Warfare 4‘s campaign as the best Modern Warfare entry since the 2019 reboot.

According to Kotaku and IGN, recent entries such as Black Ops 7 and Modern Warfare 3 received mixed or negative reception. Simon Cardy said the campaign made him feel something for the series again and called it a high note for the saga.

Kotaku and IGN reported that the story interweaves Captain Price’s lone‑wolf plot with a South Korean marine squad facing the North Korean invasion. Kotaku and IGN also highlighted the mission variety, pacing, and a behind‑enemy‑lines mission inspired by the DMZ mode.

Kotaku reported that the campaign offers a six‑hour, 16‑mission single‑player experience. Kotaku quoted Morgan Park saying, “This was billed as the conclusion of the Modern Warfare story that started in 2019.” Kotaku and IGN noted that some reviewers found the story rushed and considered Mads Mikkelsen’s character underdeveloped.
