Aspyr rebuilt the game for modern hardware. The remaster features improved textures and upgraded cutscenes, with an enhanced user interface and 4K resolution support on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2 in docked mode.

The original Shrek 2 supported only local co-op. The remaster lets up to four players join local couch co-op, online multiplayer, or mixed co-op, and solo play is available too.

New features include a Photo Mode for snapshots and a Cheat Mode or Cheats Menu with unlockable cheats to modify the playthrough.

Players journey through Shrek’s swamp, Fiona’s castle, and the kingdom of Far Far Away, revisiting movie scenes and additional sequences while controlling Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and other characters. The levels draw from DreamWorks Animation’s 2004 film. The remastered levels contain hidden Easter Eggs alongside iconic movie moments and beloved characters.

Players can swap between Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and other heroes at any time to battle enemies, conquer bosses, and solve environmental puzzles using unique abilities. Gematsu’s Aspyr-supplied overview lists this character swap as a feature. Noisy Pixel and TweakTown confirm players can switch characters regardless of platform.

The original Shrek 2 was developed by Luxoflux, published by Activision, and released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube, and PC in May 2004. Polygon and The Express Tribune name Luxoflux and Activision and connect the game to DreamWorks Animation’s 2004 film. Gematsu supplies the full original platform list and the May 2004 release date.

The remaster launches 22 years, or more than two decades, after the original Shrek 2 game came out in 2004. Noisy Pixel frames the announcement as arriving more than two decades after the 2004 movie tie-in’s original release. The outlet also says it has been 22 years since Shrek last had his swamp.

An achievement leak made the game known last month, while an early Xbox Store listing later disclosed details of planned improvements. Polygon and The Express Tribune report this pre-announcement leak sequence. Neither outlet names the specific month beyond last month.

The announcement trailer channels or parodies the cinematic marketing style of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6. Polygon says the trailer channels Rockstar’s GTA 6 marketing style, while The Express Tribune says it parodies that style. TweakTown’s headline calls it PlayStation’s newest GTA 6-style trailer that is actually Shrek 2 Remastered.

The announcement arrives ahead of the planned release of Shrek 5 in 2027. Polygon ties the timing to franchise momentum, saying fans can revisit the early-2000s heyday before the film’s theatrical return.
