Key facts

  • RAGE is Rockstar Games' proprietary technology for building open-world games such as Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.
  • Rockstar previously used RenderWare for GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas before Electronic Arts acquired Criterion Games in 2004.
  • The largest improvement in GTA 6 RAGE is how multiple systems shape the same scene rather than graphics alone.
  • Physics-based systems decide how a body reacts to movement, force, and surroundings rather than using a set animation.

Rockstar kept developing RAGE in-house instead of moving major games to a commercial engine such as Unreal Engine, Beebom reported Oct. 27, 2026. Rockstar developers said Aug. 28, 2026 that GTA 6’s overall map is three times as large as the playable area of Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 ranks as the third best-selling game ever. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said on an earnings call that Red Dead Redemption 2 achieved its highest annual unit sales since launch, with over 85 million units sold to date. Zelnick said, “Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 achieved its highest level of annual unit sales since its launch year”.

Beebom reported that before RAGE, Rockstar used RenderWare for GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas until Electronic Arts acquired Criterion Games in 2004. Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis was the first released game to use RAGE in 2006. GTA 4 showed RAGE could handle a big city setting, physics-based character reactions, and a realistic tone. GTA 5 refined the engine systems further, while Red Dead Redemption 2 introduced major improvements to environmental detail, animation, artificial intelligence, and weather.

Rockstar has spent years building the RAGE Engine before starting work on GTA 6, and that work could benefit its future games. Phil Hooker, Rockstar’s co-head of development, said in an October 2026 Bloomberg interview that GTA 6’s engine, tools, and team will help the studio create future games faster. A clearer view of Rockstar’s engine gains should arrive when GTA 6 preload begins and players start playing.

YouTuber TGG reported that Rockstar developers told him the GTA 6 map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map. “The map is twice the size of GTA 5’s map,” TGG said.

The GTA 6 map is substantially bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2 and even more densely packed. The extended look showcased nearly hundreds of NPCs on screen with distinct clothing, hairstyles, and voice lines, plus a wide variety of vehicles and underwater exploration. The GTA 6 extended look first appeared on Netflix before being published to YouTube.

Beebom reported that the largest improvement in GTA 6 RAGE is how multiple systems shape the same scene rather than graphics alone. Physics-based systems decide how a body reacts to movement, force, and surroundings rather than using a set animation. Ragdoll physics governs body movement once a character loses control during a fall, strike, or throw. Early GTA 6 gameplay footage indicates improved character movement and physical reactions according to Beebom.

Beebom reported that Rockstar has not shared the exact mechanical details behind all GTA 6 animations. Combining predefined animation with physics-driven systems can make GTA 6 character reactions feel more natural without requiring a separate animation for every possible situation. In GTA 6’s extended look, Lucia is seen climbing through a window, and Jason’s different build could affect how those movements look if suitable character-specific animation systems are used.

GTA 6 vehicle physics handles how cars accelerate, brake, steer, and collide. A crash in GTA 6 could create more believable damage where visible deformation reflects the force of impact. GTA 6 vehicle customization could affect handling more noticeably, such as a spoiler influencing high-speed stability, with customizations offered in GTA 6 Ultimate Edition bonuses.

Beebom reported that a believable open world needs non-player characters, traffic, objects, and background activity to seem like a place functioning around the player. GTA 6’s Vice City look shows Leonida as a crowded state filled with activity. A more responsive NPC system could let one pedestrian flee during a gunfight while another takes cover or calls for help, but handling this across many characters is challenging without excessive hardware demands. GTA 6 NPC interactions could allow a pedestrian distracted by a phone to stumble when bumped, while another might turn around or react angrily.

Beebom reported that GTA 6’s map contains beaches, waterways, wetlands, and coastal zones. Older games often create moving water using mathematical surfaces and animated textures rather than simulating all water in real time. Reports from October 2023 indicated Rockstar was working on more advanced water physics for GTA 6. Rockstar Games has confirmed that GTA 6 will feature a fresh weather system.

A boat traveling through choppy water could generate more realistic splashes and wakes in GTA 6. Water reflections and lighting vary based on viewing angle, light conditions, and water surface movement. GTA 6 includes a proper sweating mechanic tied to gym or crime activity, with sweat dripping according to activity intensity, and the launch trailer shows wet skin with shimmer on Lucia and Jason in a shower. Rockstar has not officially confirmed surfing as a playable activity even though GTA 6 has beaches and a coastline.

GTA 6 official clips and screenshots show reflections and lighting changing in the liquid inside bottles and glasses, not just in environmental water. Water becomes more convincing when reflections change with viewing angle, lighting conditions, and water surface movement, and this detail appears not only in environmental water but also in small containers. Lucia’s sequences show real-life-like hair physics in almost every appearance, and detail also appears realistic on Jason, Raul Bautista, and NPCs.

Beebom reported that GTA 6 graphics improvements go beyond higher quality character models and textures to include lighting, reflections, shadows, and atmospheric effects. Official GTA 6 screenshots display detailed textures on vehicles, clothing, buildings, and characters. Rockstar confirmed going to the gym and eating food concepts for GTA 6, meaning character textures change due to a strong weight system.

Global illumination concerns indirect light bouncing around an environment, with sunlight entering a room able to light nearby surfaces indirectly. These effects can be demanding in an open world with numerous enterable buildings, vehicles, and moving characters, and Rockstar must manage rendering cost while maintaining stability. GTA 6’s open world includes numerous enterable buildings, vehicles, and moving characters, making lighting and reflection effects demanding to render while maintaining a stable experience. Some technical analysis of the GTA 6 trailers has identified signs of ray-traced effects alongside detailed reflections and lighting in Rockstar’s official footage.

Rendering reflections, faraway objects, and moving waves demands substantial resources in a big open world, so Rockstar must balance visual quality with performance on GTA 6 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Digital Foundry’s October 2026 analysis of the GTA 6 launch trailer estimated an internal rendering resolution near 1440p, upscaled to 4K. Whether GTA 6 runs at 60 FPS remains unresolved. A stable 30 FPS experience with detailed graphics may be a more realistic target than 60 FPS for GTA 6, particularly if the game places heavy demands on the CPU.

Open-world engines handle rendering demands through level of detail, visibility checks, and world streaming. Level of detail lets distant objects use simpler models, visibility checks avoid rendering unseen objects, and world streaming loads needed environment parts as players move.

Beebom reported that some GTA 6 clothing shops are locked behind pre-order bonuses, and Rockstar has shown plenty of clothing options alongside hairstyles. Rockstar’s official marketing material shows wide views of Leonida with extensive environmental detail, and developers have confirmed a deep relationship system in GTA 6. Weather could influence GTA 6 gameplay if Rockstar connects environmental simulations to vehicle handling, vegetation, or water movement, with winds affecting trees and waves and rain complicating roads. Beebom suggests that with GTA 6’s criminal profile being crucial, the game may feature the most intelligent environment ever created in video games, though this is presented as a possibility rather than a confirmed Rockstar statement.

IGN reported that the GTA 6 extended look contains a TV commercial whose background scene comes from Red Dead Redemption 2, and that the river, trees, and most rocks match Red Dead Redemption 2 with only lighting adjusted. The commercial is for what might be the unhealthiest burger ever invented, tied to a 30,000-calorie burger. DangerousLeo, a Reddit user with over 730 hours in Red Dead Redemption 2, found the exact Kamassa River spot.

It is likely Rockstar tweaked a version of Red Dead Redemption 2 for the in-game commercial, using the pre-existing location as a substitute for GTA 6’s changing open world. IGN says this does not confirm a Red Dead Redemption 2 4K remaster. IGN is one of the very few outlets to have been given an exclusive preview of GTA 6.

Red Dead Online received a 2025 update adding new missions, zombies, and robots, but Red Dead Redemption 2 does not get nearly the same attention from Rockstar as GTA Online. Rockstar said in 2022 that it was reducing updates for Red Dead Redemption 2. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick labeled Grand Theft Auto Online a live service business and called Red Dead Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 legacy live services.
