Nintendo Latin America vice president Bill van Zyll said on October 11, 2026 that the company currently has no plans to discontinue physical game media during a conversation with Brazilian YouTuber Coelho no Japão.

Sony announced that it will stop producing physical discs for new PlayStation games beginning in Jan. 2028. Microsoft has taken a neutral stance on whether it will support physical games for its next-generation Xbox consoles and is exploring a disc-to-digital program.

The Nintendo Switch 2 was launched in June 2025 and was described as being just over a year old at the time of the October 2026 interview. The Switch 2 hardware supports both digital and physical game formats, offering full game cartridges as well as Game-Key Cards that serve as licenses for digital versions. Physical media allows consumers to trade or resell games, a feature Nintendo says it offers to meet player preferences.
