Square Enix said on November 6, 2026, that it is investigating the mandatory Steam update for Nier: Automata on PC that erroneously demands 366GB of storage to install, far beyond the under-50GB size the game occupies.
The patch launched on November 6 to add Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese to Steam, and Eurogamer reported that it was mandatory. Players saw the bloated install size soon after the language patch went live on Steam. It affects people on PC who are installing or updating the game.
Players and outlets said every YoRHa Edition DLC counted as large as the base game, so the installer layered copies on top of each other, which is how the total reaches 366GB once every add-on counts as full size. RPG Site checked the store pages and found every DLC listed at 40GB, with Steam actually demanding that space during setup, confirming the store page was not simply showing a wrong figure. KitGuru said Steam demands the huge amount during installation, with the real disk footprint probably far smaller.
Tbreak reported that Steam’s store page still lists about 50GB, so the bigger figure appears only when someone tries to install after buying the game. Square Enix had not released a corrected figure as of early November 2026.
Players said the patch blocked them from playing other games or downloading anything new, and some said they had taken the game off their computers while waiting for a fix. One angry Steam review showed up with other user complaints once the mandatory update went live, and one reviewer reported that a fresh Steam install demanded 366GB after 100 hours played.
Square Enix posted its statement on November 6, 2026 on the official Japanese Nier Automata account on X, saying it was looking into the cause and apologizing for the inconvenience. The Japanese post appeared the same day the patch launched, and the publisher said it regretted the trouble. An English acknowledgement followed the initial Japanese notice, and Kotaku said no one knew why the update pushed the install size from under 50GB to 366GB; the cause remained unclear on November 6, 2026. “We are currently investigating the cause and working to resolve the issue.
We apologize for the inconvenience.” Square Enix said.
Square Enix offered a temporary workaround: in Steam’s Properties menu, players uncheck the DLC items so only the main game installs. Players can restore the extra content after a permanent fix arrives. Tbreak tells PC players to hold off on reinstalling until Square Enix issues a fix, or to turn off automatic updates in Steam so the patch cannot arrive before the fix.
The problem has been reported only on Steam for PC, and sources do not describe the same issue on PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch. Final Weapon told Tbreak the patch notes apply to Steam only and that no release date has been set for PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch.
KitGuru said the game continues to get new patches on PC about a decade after it first came out. Some players say the trouble disappeared by itself, while others still see the bloated size when installing or updating as of November 6, 2026.
Outlets disagree about how big the patch download is, and that is separate from the storage Steam requests at install; the dispute concerns reserved installation space versus the actual download size. KitGuru calls the update an 8GB patch, but Tbreak points to Final Weapon’s figure of a 107.7MB download.
