Key facts

  • NVIDIA announced that the DLSS 5 3D‑Guided Neural Rendering model will launch on October 16.
  • Compared with the March technical demonstration, cumulative performance gains for DLSS 5 now reach ten‑fold.
  • After the rollout, the model becomes the default for all future DLSS 5 titles.
  • Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled to receive official DLSS 5 support on November 5 for RTX 50 series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark platforms.

NVIDIA announced that the DLSS 5 3D‑Guided Neural Rendering model will launch on Oct. 16, promising twice the performance of the September version and 20 % less VRAM usage at 4K.

Enabling the DLSS 5 neural renderer in NBA 2K27 incurs a performance hit of roughly 50–60% according to NVIDIA. To mitigate that hit, NVIDIA advised using other DLSS components such as super resolution and frame generation. NVIDIA said that at launch, DLSS 5 only functioned on RTX 5000‑series graphics cards, with a recommendation of RTX 5070 or better. NVIDIA described DLSS 5 as a 3D‑bound neural rendering technique that overlays an AI‑generated image using the game’s geometry and color data.

NVIDIA claimed DLSS 5 will not add extra scene elements or misplace objects because it is constrained by the original geometry and color data. NVIDIA said that enabling DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 will have a noticeable impact on the game’s appearance. NVIDIA stated that higher quality source material yields better final image quality when using DLSS 5.

TweakTown reported that during tests on an RTX 5080, activating Neural Rendering in NBA 2K27 cut the frame rate from 145 fps down to 50 fps at 4K resolution, with DLAA and ray‑traced reflections. TweakTown noted that this represented a 65 % performance penalty.

According to early reports, the community‑driven DLSS 5 Neural Rendering mod can increase NBA 2K27’s frame rate by up to 39 fps. Early reports said that after obtaining the DLL, users place it with the game executable and press the Home button in‑game to adjust the effect. Early reports stated that on an RTX 4080 SUPER test, old DLSS 5 needed 8.8 ms per frame and the new version needed 5.4 ms.

Early reports stated that this raised the raw frame rate from 108 fps to 150 fps; with 4× multi‑frame generation the effective rate went from 27 fps to 37.5 fps, a 39 % uplift. Early reports said that on an RTX 4060, Forza Horizon 6 showed a frame‑rate jump from 27 fps to 37 fps when the new DLSS 5 model was enabled. Early reports said that in Resident Evil 9, the visual difference between the old and new DLSS 5 models is described as minor despite the performance improvement. According to early reports, NBA 2K27 is cited as a less stylized game that fits the photorealistic look of DLSS 5 Neural Rendering.

NVIDIA announced that the DLSS 5 3D‑Guided Neural Rendering model will launch on Oct. 16. NVIDIA said that at launch it will deliver twice the performance of the September version and use 20 % less VRAM at 4K. NVIDIA said that the October update reduces the model size by 24 % to about 118 million parameters. NVIDIA said that compared with the March technical demonstration, cumulative performance gains for DLSS 5 now reach ten‑fold.

NVIDIA’s official blog states the updated model enables up to a 1.4× frame‑rate increase in NBA 2K27. KuCoin reported that under 4K settings, NBA 2K27’s frame rate rises from 65 fps to over 90 fps with the new DLSS 5 model. KuCoin reported that this represents a greater than 30 % improvement over the September version. NVIDIA said that the optimized DLSS 5 model can improve in‑game performance by up to 1.4× relative to the September version.

Key figures, DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Performance Metrics. RTX 5080 frame rate: 50 fps; Mod frame rate boost: 39 fps; October update gain: 1.4×; New model frame rate: 90 fps; GPU overhead cut: 50%; VRAM reduction: 20%.

NVIDIA said that the Oct. 16 rollout applies to GeForce RTX 50‑series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops, and the GeForce NOW cloud gaming service. NVIDIA said that after the rollout, the model becomes the default for all future DLSS 5 titles. NVIDIA said that Hogwarts Legacy is scheduled to receive official DLSS 5 support on Nov. 5 for RTX 50 series, GeForce NOW, and RTX Spark platforms. NVIDIA said that the RTX Remix modding platform will gain DLSS 5 support on Oct. 23, allowing per‑object control, visual‑effect adjustments, and scene masking.

NVIDIA showcased DLSS 5 integration with Sparkles/Kim2091’s Fallout 4 RTX project, which added helmet reflections, material details, and shadows. NVIDIA also showcased integration with SoftSoundd’s Mirror’s Edge RTX project, improving contact shadows, ambient occlusion, and lighting. KuCoin reported that a beta DLSS Frame Generation Performance Mode (Preset C) is available for RTX 40‑ and RTX 50‑series GPUs and RTX Spark laptops. KuCoin reported that this mode can boost frame rates by up to 35 % while slightly lowering image quality.

DLSS 5 differs from standard DLSS upscaling or frame generation by using AI to boost lighting and material detail, enhancing skin, reflections, and shadows. The modding community has already brought DLSS 5 Neural Rendering to older RTX GPUs. Tools such as MFG Unlock can coexist with RenoDX DLSS 5 mods for further experimentation. Compatibility of MFG Unlock with the October DLSS 5 update remains unverified; MFG Unlock targets frame generation rather than Neural Rendering itself.

The updated DLSS 5 model arrives in NBA 2K27 on Oct. 16 for GeForce RTX 50‑series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops, and GeForce NOW. The model will become the default for forthcoming DLSS 5 titles, including Hogwarts Legacy and Where Winds Meet. Hogwarts Legacy support is set for Nov. 5, Where Winds Meet for late November, and RTX Remix support for Oct. 23.

NetEase’s game “Yanyun Shisiliu Sheng” will add official DLSS 5 support in late November. The title has over 100 million players and a peak Steam concurrent count exceeding 250 000.
