PortMaster brings native PC ports to handhelds such as the R36S

PortMaster installs PC games such as Quake, Doom and Diablo on handhelds, according to Hobbyist Nirvana.

PortMaster is a community project that packages hundreds of native ports and installs them with one button press, according to Hobbyist Nirvana. It installs real PC games such as Quake, Doom, Diablo, Jedi Knight and Cave Story recompiled for ARM chips, and it needs an internet connection to browse and install ports. ARM is a processor architecture common in mobile and handheld devices. Non-WiFi consoles transfer files by SD card instead.

PortMaster serves dozens of handhelds, many more powerful than the R36S with its Rockchip RK3326 chip, according to Hobbyist Nirvana. The outlet said the R36S screen is 640×480, and rendering above it is pure waste. It added that modern Unity games usually cannot run on the RK3326 even when a port exists, and it flagged anything with mid-2000s 3D lighting and effects as unlikely to run well.

Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy are playable through the open-source engine but sit at the demanding end for the RK3326, according to Hobbyist Nirvana. Enabling the CPU overclock helps demanding 3D ports but drops runtime noticeably. CPU overclock means running the processor faster than its default speed. A 3500mAh replacement cell is the cheapest meaningful upgrade if PortMaster is the main use case.

Hobbyist Nirvana sells the HN-R36S-WiFi for ₹4,899 and the HN-R36XX for ₹4,999, shipping from Gurgaon. The outlet said PortMaster lets a ₹4,899 handheld play the 1990s PC shooter canon natively alongside 15,000 retro games, and it added that PortMaster shows a device-aware compatibility rating per port that is more current than any article.

On current ArkOS builds, PortMaster is likely already installed under Options → Tools in EmulationStation, according to Hobbyist Nirvana.

R36S AU said the R36S runs a Rockchip RK3326 chip with 1GB of RAM and handles systems up to the PS1 era. PS1 refers to an earlier generation of home consoles. The site placed the R36S at the bottom of PortMaster’s supported range, noting that heavier ports want an RK3566 or newer with more RAM.

A microSD card up to 512GB can be paired with the R36S for maximum library headroom, according to R36S AU. A microSD card is a small removable storage card. R36S AU also listed the R36S at $79, the R36 Max at $109.95, and the Retroid Pocket Flip 2 at $542.95. The outlet described PortMaster as the single best thing you can install on an R36S.

PortMaster entries are either genuinely free games or engine ports needing files from a legally owned copy, according to R36S AU. GTA III, Vice City, Half-Life, Quake and Stardew Valley work as engine ports requiring legally owned game files. The outlet said Cave Story runs beautifully on the R36S and is one of the best games on the device.

Downloading a port from the PortMaster site produces a zip archive to copy into the platform’s autoinstall folder, according to Jeod’s Retro Handheld Ports. A zip archive is a compressed file package. Autoinstall paths differ by operating system, including /roms/tools/PortMaster/autoinstall/ for ArkOS and /roms/ports/PortMaster/autoinstall/ for AmberELEC, ROCKNIX, uOS and Jelos.

The muOS path is /mmc/MUOS/PortMaster/autoinstall/, and Knulli uses /userdata/system/.local/share/PortMaster/autoinstall/, according to Jeod’s Retro Handheld Ports. A 030_rhh.source.json file goes into the PortMaster/config/ folder to load ports into the PortMaster GUI. A GUI is a graphical user interface.

Pharos is a user-friendly alternative that automatically handles repository parsing, downloads and installation, according to Jeod’s Retro Handheld Ports. Repository parsing means reading a list of available software packages. Users must install gmtoolkit-aarch64 manually for the PortMaster app, unlike Pharos.
