The Knightmare development team dropped the life-force survival mechanic from its official PC adaptation, letting players explore puzzles thoughtfully rather than race against a clock that constantly declines, the team said Oct. 25, 2026.
Players will pay nothing for the adventure, which the team distributes free of charge. The team plans a PC release in late 2027 for the show’s 40th anniversary. The team has direct permission and creative guidance from Tim Child, the original series creator, and the game is officially licensed with his blessing.
Ewen Watson, the writer and designer, leads the team, while Sathya Schlösser handles artwork and animation. David Rowe designed the Knightmare logo, and Ed Welch composed the Knightmare theme, according to the credits. The FAQ says Watson and Schlösser developed the game after receiving permission from Child, Rowe, and Welch. Every visual and audio element is hand-drawn by real people, and the team used no generative AI during production; Watson said, “Everything you see and hear is made by real humans”.
Voice actors from the original series are coming back, with Hugo Myatt playing Treguard and Mark Knight playing Lord Fear. The official site names eight cast members: Hugo Myatt, Mark Knight, Clifford Barry, Katharine Bennett-Fox, Edmund Dehn, Iona Kennedy, Paul Valentine, and Alec Westwood. According to the FAQ, Treguard’s original actor voices the character, and their original actors voice other classic characters too. Clifford Barry plays Brother Strange, Edmund Dehn plays Gumboil the Knight, Iona Kennedy plays Greystagg, and Paul Valentine and Alec Westwood play the jesters Motley and Folly.
The game lets players turn back to earlier locations, die without starting the whole quest over, and carry more than three objects. It follows the show’s original setup, with teams guiding a blindfolded dungeoneer through fantasy dungeons and Treguard serving as dungeon master. The FAQ removes life force and food, and the team encourages players to explore at their own pace. Expected runtime is about one to two hours, and the FAQ describes it as a full but short game.
There will be no physical release; players can download it from the website, though the team lacks resources to localize into other languages. The team, a small independent operation, has no console editions planned because the game is free-to-play. The team is certain about a PC release and hopes for Mac and Linux versions. After the game launches on its website, the team may look at more gaming services.
Knightmare originally aired on ITV and CITV from 1987 to 1994. Three children guided a fourth teammate called the Dungeoneer through a hand-painted dungeon full of riddles, spells, and traps, with Treguard serving as dungeon master. Four-child teams moved through a hazardous dungeon; one contestant wore the Helmet of Justice, which blocked their sight, while teammates shouted directions from Treguard’s antechamber. Computer games tied to the show came out in 1987 and 1991, and a one-off YouTube special aired in 2013; the FAQ notes that real children went into Knightmare’s fantasy world for a daring quest, but most did not survive.

The reveal trailer went up on the Knightmare: The Game YouTube channel on October 23, 2026, and it runs one minute and 23 seconds. The trailer’s description lists hand-drawn art, deadly puzzles, and a simple point-and-click system. In the trailer, Lord Fear returns and a new quest awaits, with players invited to wear the Helmet of Justice. The reveal trailer is hosted at Knightmaregame.co.uk, the official site.
The site describes a 2D computer game with original-series cast members. Published screenshots show Dark Spire Prison’s entrance, a scene beneath the Spectral Mountains, Lord Fear casting a deadly spell, and the Place of Choice where the quest starts. The official website sets a planned release window of late 2027.
The developers are making the game because they consider Knightmare the greatest show ever made. Its goal is to keep the show’s concept, world, and characters while changing some elements for a computer game. Asked about a longer game, the team said it would like to make one but cannot right now. According to Eurogamer, the show introduced a whole generation of children to fantasy role-playing games and computer games on its own, and the outlet reports that players now have time to explore because the team removed the life force meter, called legendary (k)nightmare fuel.
Many young viewers learned about structured puzzles and fantasy role-playing from the show’s practical sets and effects instead of digital shortcuts, according to The Intelligent UK. The outlet adds that the announcement is part of wider plans to celebrate the show’s place in British children’s television and its effect on generations raised on imaginative, hands-on storytelling.
