Bill Skarsgård was confirmed in September 2026 as the lead in Hideo Kojima’s action-espionage game Physint after PlayStation canceled it.

PlayStation Studios told Kojima Productions in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel Physint, according to FandomWire’s summary of the project. After three months searching for a new partner, Kojima Productions teamed with Xbox, with Microsoft intervening to keep the game alive. In a statement dated September 10, 2026, Kojima called the game a genre-defining action-espionage title and said development would continue. Physint has no release date, platform price, or confirmed regional launch yet, including for the UAE, Saudi Arabia, or Egypt.

According to IGN Middle East, Bloomberg sources reported missed deadlines and a budget running well over projections for a game still years from release. IGN Middle East connected those issues to PlayStation’s decision to drop the title before Xbox picked it up. The outlet said much about the project remains unknown.

Kojima discussed the game’s identity on his Koji10 podcast in October 2026, saying Physint would feature new ideas and a different approach to spy action. He has described Physint as a spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid, with new approaches to espionage, and said he would not merely recreate his earlier series. In early October 2026, he told IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey that the game should evoke the roots of Metal Gear Solid while offering a new interactive experience.

The actor said he is a dedicated Metal Gear Solid fan who has played every console entry from the first PlayStation through the last release. He spoke on November 5, 2026, during Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying his affection for the series and its creator was a key reason he wanted to work with Kojima. Skarsgård shares a birth year with Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake’s release, meaning Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was probably the first new franchise entry he experienced.

The actor’s connection to Kojima came through musician Yoann “Woodkid” Lemoine, composer for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Skarsgård spotted Kojima Productions merchandise at Woodkid’s studio, leading to an introduction. Kojima traveled to Sweden to meet the actor and his family, then pitched the lead role, which Skarsgård accepted.

The actor said his affection for Metal Gear Solid and a chance to work with Kojima decided him on the unnamed Physint protagonist role. He will handle performance capture (movements and expressions recorded for the digital character) for the game, building on earlier work in Marvel’s Eternals and with Goodbye Kansas, a studio known for Alan Wake 2, God of War, Cyberpunk 2077 and other games, according to the actor’s remarks.

Kojima said the script is ready, though motion-capture and filming performances still need work, Yahoo Tech reported. The actor called the project film-like yet interactive, describing it as cinema merged with a playable universe. He added that Kojima is creating a new medium blending an eight-hour narrative with an interactive playable universe, and said Kojima told him he would not direct a film because he is pursuing that medium instead during the same November 5 podcast appearance.

Bill Skarsgård, Charlee Fraser, Don Lee and Minami Hamabe make up the confirmed cast, revealed in September, according to IGN Middle East. FandomWire reported that approximately 70% of the cast are fans of Kojima’s earlier games, with the director pitching the story personally to the actors. The game’s tagline is The Next Cold War Begins, Kotaku reported. Photos show Skarsgård at Kojima’s studio more than a year before the September 19, 2026 report.

Sony funded the project at first, but PlayStation withdrew support, and Kojima moved the game to Xbox. Kojima has called Physint the biggest-selling game he is capable of making.

Xbox is paying for development on Kojima’s horror game OD Knock, starring Hunter Schafer and Sophia Lillis. IGN Middle East mentioned OD Knock alongside Physint as an upcoming Kojima Productions project.

Earlier in 2026, Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein signed on to direct the Metal Gear movie. IGN Middle East called them the Final Destination: Bloodlines duo and said details on the film remain sparse.

FandomWire reported that production on Physint is expected to begin in 2027, with Kojima suggesting it could take another five to six years to arrive, leaving the game several years from release. The actor posted a video message on September 18, 2026, saying he was excited to star in the game; Kojima’s account shared it on September 19, 2026.
