Owlcat Games replaced the voice actor for the male protagonist and his twin brother J in The Expanse: Osiris Reborn with Blythe Melin, announcing the change on Nov. 6, 2026.
Players who tested the closed beta called the original voice work flat and boring, and Owlcat said in a blog post earlier in 2026 that the previous actor was less expressive than it wanted. The studio decided to recast both the male protagonist and his twin brother J based on that testing. More than seven thousand players completed the survey after the closed beta. Owlcat has not announced the identity of the previous voice actor, and IGN reported that its writer could find no public announcement from the studio naming that actor before the recast was revealed.
Owlcat also redesigned the male captain’s default face model to be less like a standard military soldier and more detailed and polished, giving players a stronger starting point for customization. The protagonist’s appearance is fully customizable, including gender, and IGN noted players can choose between male and female versions. IGN compared the canon look to Commander Shepard, while TheSixthAxis described the male default as having wavy hair and the twin as having side-shaving and a top knot. Owlcat says a default look matters as players create their own captain, and Push Square said the default appearance matters as a starting point for character creation, while PlayFront said the new design fits The Expanse universe rather than looking like a generic soldier.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn launches on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5 in spring 2027. IGN and GamingBolt both list that launch window, with GamingBolt publishing it in May 2026 before the recast announcement. IGN also confirmed the spring 2027 release in its November 6 coverage. Owlcat said it will share details about the female protagonist’s voice actor and the rest of the cast at a later date, and Blythe Melin is the only performer confirmed for the two male roles so far.
Blythe Melin said voicing both the Captain and J is a unique challenge because he must make two biologically related characters sound distinct without being one-note or too similar. The Captain is a player avatar, while J is a pre-established companion with a personality built by writers and directors, which Melin described as tricky but manageable because of that distinction.

Melin is best known for animation roles in the DC comics universe and has done mostly background non-player character voices in video games as a U.S.-based actor, meaning voices for characters controlled by the game rather than by a player. His prior game credits include Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, Diablo IV, and Ready or Not. Push Square and PlayFront listed those credits when introducing him as the new voice of the captain and his twin brother J. IGN contrasted Melin’s animation background with his video game work, noting he had mostly done background NPC roles before this lead casting.
Owlcat plans to improve character and facial animations after the beta, so they feel more natural and polished, and is reworking the unfinished ask system, which required a full rework, while improving the cover system to make interactions easier and more intuitive. The studio acknowledged some conversations felt inconsistent or out of place and will adjust them, so character reactions feel more natural, responsive, and grounded, with GamingBolt reporting that while the narrative tone is deliberate, some moments felt out of place. Owlcat presented the voice recast as the most notable change.
Beta feedback praised the visuals, combat, music, and the atmosphere of the Larry and the Pinkwater 4 station, even as the voice work drew criticism. GamingBolt described the game as off to a strong start despite the voice criticism. Owlcat said in May 2026 that another beta is likely to be released in the coming months, while it was still reviewing closed beta feedback. Players will hear less of J during battles.
Push Square reported that early responses to the recast and visual changes appear positive after the original male captain was widely panned. The outlet’s earlier hands-on preview had criticized the original male captain, and it described reactions to the Nov. 6, 2026 reveal as positive.
