  • ComicBook.com reports this is the first time A New Beginning: Final Cut is available for free.
  • A New Beginning has a score of 72 on Metacritic, 3.6 out of 5 stars on GOG, and a 73 percent approval rating on Steam.
  • ComicBook.com assesses A New Beginning as not the best game of 2012 but a decent adventure game, especially for players interested in its climate change commentary mixed with sci-fi time travel.

GOG began giving away the PC adventure A New Beginning: Final Cut for free on October 30 through its store, with the 72-hour promotion ending November 2.

Players go to the game’s official GOG store page, choose “Go to giveaway,” log into a GOG account, and complete the steps to add it to their library. Players keep the game permanently after claiming it before the deadline. They do not need to install it right away, but it must appear in their account before the promotion ends.

GOG’s store page shows the promotion ending November 2 at 4 PM EET. The giveaway is not explicitly tied to GOG’s currently underway 18th Anniversary Sale.

The title is a story-focused adventure rendered in a graphic novel style, centered on a climate disaster and time travel. Bent Svensson, a newly retired engineer in a remote Norwegian forest, receives a visit from Fay, a young time-traveler from the future. Svensson, a former workaholic who traded alternative energy research for seclusion, must work with Fay to recover his research from a reckless energy tycoon and prevent a climate cataclysm.

The adventure first appeared in Germany in 2010 and received a global release in 2012. The Final Cut edition matches the original game in content, with only small differences such as added language support and Steam achievements. Metacritic lists it at 72, GOG users rate it 3.6 out of 5 stars, and Steam approval stands at 73 percent. Completing the game takes about 10 to 12 hours, with little side content or replayability.

The studio halted game development in 2023, though it continues to publish titles. Its catalog focuses on niche adventures, and a separate Daedalic adventure also went free on GOG recently. ComicBook.com calls it a decent adventure game rather than the best of 2012, particularly for players drawn to its climate change commentary and sci-fi time travel.

A 2011 preview called it promising pure science fiction built around time travel and a conflict between magic power sources. The preview also presented the story as averting environmental disaster without preaching or teaching lessons. It labeled the finished game a solid point-and-clicker from a studio just starting to establish itself as a genre master.

ComicBook.com says the giveaway marks the first time GOG has offered the Final Cut edition at no cost. GOG typically charges $10 for the game.
