This is a new development in a story we reported earlier: Polygon praises World of Warcraft: Forever as brilliant reinvention.

Key facts

  • Blizzard posted that World of Warcraft Forever servers run on 3,924 Virtual Machines, 251,136 GB of Memory, and 70,480 CPU Cores.
  • World of Warcraft Forever gates opened at 3 PM PST / 6 PM EST.
  • Microsoft and Xbox acquired World of Warcraft along with Activision, Blizzard, and King a few years ago.
  • The beta level cap for World of Warcraft Forever was level 30 even after it was expanded.

On November 7, 2026, Blizzard said on official Warcraft social media that World of Warcraft Forever marked the biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players, topping Wrath of the Lich King from almost two decades ago. The company framed the achievement as historic and thanked players for making it possible. @Warcraft posted “WoW: Forever has achieved the biggest launch in WoW history by peak concurrent players.”

The post also said World of Warcraft Forever saw the most returning players in the game’s history. Blizzard attributed the success entirely to the player community.

IGN’s live blog reported that servers felt great with no real lag or disconnects one hour into the launch. This positive assessment came during the early hours even as other players encountered queue times, faction limits, and competition for monsters.

World of Warcraft Forever runs on 3,924 Virtual Machines, according to Blizzard. The servers include 251,136 GB of Memory and 70,480 CPU Cores. The specification appeared in IGN’s live blog on November 5, 2026, illustrating the scale of infrastructure deployed for the release.

The gates to World of Warcraft Forever opened at 3 PM PST / 6 PM EST. The only barrier to live play is an active WoW subscription, or a friend code.

Blizzard knew about payment processing problems at launch and worked on them on November 4, 2026. Blizzard CS – The Americas said “As soon as possible! Website issues are due to the amount of traffic, keep trying as you can, maybe even wait just a few minutes.”

High demand on PvP (player versus player) servers during launch led Blizzard to turn off new Horde character creation. The reporter observed large numbers of Undead players in starting areas. Players said reserved characters were no longer available after launch. Others were kicked offline as soon as they reached the character select screen.

The World of Warcraft forums went down during launch. At least one player said 2,135 people were ahead in the login queue when the forums became inaccessible. Blizzard was aware of the Rulesets being unavailable problem and reported it to the developers. Some players found a workaround by restarting the client.

The name reservation system opened the previous week, and European players could not get in for hours while American players faced long server queues and disconnects.

World of Warcraft Forever reworks the original game vision with minimal handholding. It increases risk and reward, a reduction in convenience features that reduce in-game social interaction, and improves visual quality. It uses an alternative timeline set approximately one year before the original base game and Blizzard designed it to reverse design trends seen in the retail version.

The expansion includes thousands of new quests and stories in an alternative timeline set a year or so before the original base game. The World of Warcraft Forever team operates separately from the World of Warcraft Retail team.

Microsoft and Xbox bought World of Warcraft with Activision, Blizzard, and King a few years ago. You can play World of Warcraft only on PC and cloud streaming services such as NVIDIA GeForce Now. WoW and Final Fantasy 14 stand as the only large populated MMORPGs in the West using purely subscriptions.

World of Warcraft Forever’s beta capped characters at level 30 even after developers expanded the cap. Most people outside some promotions needed a Skyborne pack to enter the beta. Developers said the beta produced the wildest numbers they had seen in 17 years.

Taldramir, The Whispering Wood, a healing weapon made with Weta Workshop, ranks as the first legendary weapon in World of Warcraft Forever. Blizzard announced the weapon on November 4, 2026, as part of a collaboration with the special effects studio. The Shaman class Discord shut down over patch note changes, echoing ret Paladins who did the same last year in Midnight.

Forum posts pointed to AMD driver issues causing timeouts, black screens, and hard reboots during beta testing, with the fault possibly on AMD’s side. IGN published Len Hafer’s review in progress with no verdict yet, though it seemed good so far.
