Key facts

  • Sharma teased the subtitle with eight asterisks on X; "Sentinel" has exactly eight letters.
  • The game is reportedly set in Hammerfell, a desert province of the Redguards.
  • The game would be the first in the series focused on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves.
  • Only a name reveal is expected, not a trailer, platforms, or release date.

Outlets reported on Oct. 29, 2026 that Bethesda is internally calling The Elder Scrolls VI The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. Bethesda and Microsoft have not confirmed the Sentinel title or a November reveal window. Sources expect only a name reveal rather than a trailer, platforms, or a release date. Other outlets including Gematsu have repeated the report without independent confirmation.

All reporting relies on sources close to Bethesda and The Verge’s notepad post. Sources familiar with Bethesda’s plans confirmed the internal title to The Verge’s Tom Warren on Oct. 29, 2026.

Bethesda has provided virtually no information about The Elder Scrolls VI since its E3 2018 announcement. Bethesda occasionally acknowledged The Elder Scrolls VI publicly before this reporting.

An official title reveal could come in November 2026. The timing aligns with the 15th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which launched on Nov. 11, 2011. Skyrim counts among the best-selling RPGs ever made, and mods built by its players remain one of the industry’s largest fan communities. The Verge reports that Bethesda could announce the title as soon as next month.

Fans uncovered the Sentinel title in August 2026. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma saw a live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI on Aug. 11, 2026 and called it incredible. Sharma teased the subtitle with eight asterisks on X that day; Sentinel has exactly eight letters. An Easter egg allegedly hidden in an early Starfield trailer also led fans to speculate the subtitle.

Bethesda has been showing Sentinel gameplay internally in recent months on Creation Engine 3, an upgraded version of the engine used for Starfield. The studio has been using upgraded Creation Engine 3 to iterate and test the game faster than before. The game would be the first in the series focused on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, with players uncovering secrets behind ancient artifacts like Starfield. In 2025, Bethesda revealed the game was already fully playable.

Bethesda first announced The Elder Scrolls VI at E3 2018 with a brief teaser showing only the title and a landscape shot. Todd Howard said in February 2026 that the game was still far out from release. Howard said the game will resemble Skyrim more than Fallout 76 and Starfield. Starfield launched to a mixed reception.

Bethesda optimized its production pipeline on Creation Engine 3 after the mixed reception to Starfield. In July 2026, Bethesda published a roadmap calling The Elder Scrolls VI its main development focus.

The game is reportedly set in Hammerfell, a desert province of the Redguards. Sentinel is a major city in Hammerfell and the capital of the kingdom of Sentinel, and the Redgarruds are one of several races that appear throughout the Elder Scrolls series and reside in the Hammerfell area. Hammerfell is a western region of Tamriel with locales ranging from the Alik’r Desert to bays, harbors, and fertile plains. The province appeared in The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard and The Elder Scrolls Online, but has not featured in a mainline Elder Scrolls title since The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall in 1996.

Microsoft acquired Bethesda Game Studios, making The Elder Scrolls VI an Xbox-owned property. Microsoft is preparing its next console generation under the Project Helix multi-console strategy. The company still has more layoffs to conduct throughout the Xbox division. CWA workers protested Xbox layoffs with a giant inflatable rat outside Bethesda’s office in August 2026.

The protest occurred outside Bethesda Game Studios’ Maryland office during Sharma’s visit to watch a live playthrough of The Elder Scrolls VI. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is reportedly prioritizing key IPs including Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Sources say the reveal would signal the studio is still alive even as Microsoft cuts more jobs across Xbox.

Microsoft is reportedly considering an Xbox-exclusive launch for The Elder Scrolls VI. Bethesda has not said whether the game will skip PlayStation. Bethesda’s previous Elder Scrolls release was Oblivion Remastered. Asha Sharma confirmed Xbox console exclusivity for Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, and Xbox recently surveyed players on exclusivity.
