CD Projekt Red announced a surprise Cyberpunk 2077 update on October 20, 2026, confirming that Update 2.5 will launch on October 22, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The free patch brings new cyberware customization options and a dual-wielding playstyle to the game, with a Nintendo Switch 2 release to follow shortly afterward. The update is timed to coincide with the debut of the second season of the Edgerunners anime on Netflix.

The developer will host a REDstream broadcast on October 21, 2026, to reveal full details about Update 2.5. The stream will be available on Twitch, YouTube, and Steam, with broadcast times starting at 8 AM PT, 11 AM ET, and 5 PM CEST. Patch notes for the update are scheduled to be published on the same day, giving players a full breakdown of every change.

Update 2.5 introduces cyberware customization, allowing players to modify their character’s cybernetic enhancements with new options. CD Projekt Red teased the feature in a social media post alongside the new dual-wielding playstyle, writing “New Edgerunners, new chrome, new playstyle.” Both were highlighted as part of the Edgerunners 2 tie-in content, described as new items and features for the game. The additions generated excitement among fans who have been calling for more meaningful content for the nearly six-year-old game.

The update features content inspired by Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, which debuted on Netflix on October 20, 2026, with all 10 episodes. The second season is produced by Studio Trigger in collaboration with CD Projekt Red. Kai Ikarashi directs the season, with Kanno Ichigo serving as lead character designer.

Masahiko Otsuka and Bartosz Sztybor return from the first season, with Sztybor serving as showrunner, story writer, and producer. IGN reviewed the season and described it as off to a tremendous start.

Update 2.5 is the first major update for Cyberpunk 2077 since June 2025’s Update 2.3. The long gap between updates had left fans waiting, with many hoping for meaningful DLC or expansions. CD Projekt Red had stated in May 2026 that it had no plans for further Cyberpunk 2077 DLCs or expansions, directing attention toward the in-development Cyberpunk 2. The 2.5 update runs counter to CD Projekt’s May 2026 statement about no plans for further DLC.

As of July 2026, Cyberpunk 2077 had sold 40 million copies since its December 2020 launch, an increase of 5 million copies from November 2025. The game received one expansion so far: 2023’s Phantom Liberty, which starred Idris Elba. CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski suggested that Cyberpunk 2, codenamed Project Orion, will not be released until at least 2030. The sequel is further behind The Witcher 4 in development.

The original Edgerunners Update, Patch 1.6, was released on September 6, 2022, ahead of the first season’s Netflix premiere. That patch added a wardrobe system, the Roach Race mini-game, and the option to take pictures with Nibbles. Update 2.5 follows a similar pattern, tying game content to the anime series.

CD Projekt Red shared official artwork for Update 2.5 on X on October 20, 2026, crediting artists Taisei Uchida for original art, Yukiko Kakita for ink and paint check, and Yuichiro Tozawa for special effects. Paweł Sasko, associate game director on Cyberpunk 2, teased the update on social media, expressing strong enthusiasm for the new content. His message generated excitement among the fanbase, which has been eagerly anticipating new content for the game.

According to Polygon, a 2.5D Edgerunners brawler game codenamed Gemini was reportedly in development at WayForward between 2025 and 2026. Details on the project were discovered in a former WayForward developer’s portfolio, which described it as a rollback-driven brawler. WayForward, known for River City Girls and Shantae, underwent layoffs in September 2025, and it is unclear whether the project is still in active development. Polygon reached out to CD Projekt Red and WayForward for comment.
