Wube Software released Factorio version 2.1 as its final major update on the stable branch on Oct. 23, 2026.
The studio shared the news through its official Friday Facts blog after experimental testing began in June to gather player feedback. Factorio entered Early Access in 2016 and received its full release in 2020 following four years of early access. Wube described the update as the end of major feature work for a title in development for about 14 years.
Wube first explained the plan in May, saying it was satisfied with the design of Factorio and Space Age and saw no major systems missing. The studio said it planned version 2.1 as the final major update because the game’s design and progression finished and no required core features were missing. The May announcement set the expectation that 2.1 would conclude active game development, though Wube said it would still maintain the title.
Wube is ending major gameplay changes and shifting resources to new projects while still providing bug fixes, platform compatibility improvements, and modding support. Some team members are already prototyping games other than Factorio and experimental projects, but the studio said it will show nothing for a long time.
The patch adds more than 30 quality-of-life improvements and small features for the base game and the Space Age expansion while skipping new planets, enemies, and research trees. Patch 2.1 focuses on expanding the space logistics introduced by Space Age rather than adding another expansion with new planets.
Space Age launched in 2024, and Patch 2.1 arrives almost exactly two years after that expansion.
Rockets can now carry different item types in a single launch under the mixed cargo feature. Before this change, sending materials into orbit could require launching a full stack of one item even when only a few different components sufficed. Pumpjacks and burner mining drills can now flip instead of merely rotate. Pumpjacks and burner mining drills were difficult to reorient, so the ability to flip them improves production facility placement.
Players can now turn off the quality mechanics in Space Age after the studio uncoupled them from the expansion. Players who dislike different item quality tiers can turn the mechanic off while still using the rest of the Space Age expansion.
Pipes that carry different fluids will no longer merge silently and will issue a warning instead, while a new pump rendering system makes rail fluid wagon connections simpler. Damage from asteroid collisions now depends on how much health an asteroid has left instead of its speed, which makes collisions easier to predict.
Visual improvements touch assembling machines, rocket silos, and oil refineries, and the patch adds a handful of new models. The update gives Factorio one last graphical polish including new models and rendering improvements for key production and military buildings.

A mass-based model now determines space platform flight performance, replacing the width-based calculation that once made long, narrow ships the fastest choice. The shift from a width-based to a mass-based drag model removes the advantage of building long, narrow space platforms.
Biter expansion groups now scale with evolution rather than spawning many small nests, biters choose more natural base locations, and early exploration no longer prevents expansions near the player’s factory. The reworked enemy logic aims to make clearing biter nests feel like a real fight rather than repetitive busywork.
The new landing pad unloading bay allows inserters to take cargo directly from a landing pad and move it onto belts, trains, or other inserter destinations. The cargo bay removes an unnecessary step from moving materials between landing pads and factory transport systems like belts and trains.
The game now runs natively on ARM64 Linux hardware including Steam Frame and Raspberry Pi servers plus Apple Silicon Macs using Asahi Linux. Native support extends the game to handheld and server hardware.
Land mines now serve as tripwires and detectors for enemies. The circuit network expansion lets boilers, heat exchangers, and pipes connect to the circuit network, Factorio’s system for wiring factory logic.
Labs can switch research when circuit conditions are met, and different colored wires distinguish circuit inputs from outputs.
Older 2.0 saves load in the new version, but changes like the circuit network’s new input-output split can break older factory builds. After updating a save or blueprint to 2.1, players cannot go back to 2.0, so the studio advises making backups of anything worth keeping.
Many popular mods received updates during the long experimental testing period. Some mods that are not actively maintained might still be unavailable.
