Square Enix launched the first Final Fantasy 7 collaboration in Final Fantasy XIV on Oct. 28, 2026, in the Manderville Gold Saucer.

In Keybound Brawler, teams of up to four players fight Final Fantasy 7 Remake foes such as Shinra soldiers by typing words like Curaga, Aerith Gainsborough, and Quetzalcoatl. Players on consoles can join with most USB keyboards.

Players need level 15, progress through the main story to the three main cities, and speak with the Well-heeled Youth in Ul’dah to start the quest It Could Happen to You and enter the Gold Saucer. Inside, they find the Catlike Mammet at the main entrance hall, at coordinates x:5.4, y:7.0, which offers the quest Keyward Bound and leads to a Final Fantasy 7 Remake-themed hub.

Players can earn Tifa and Barret costume sets, plus a wearable gatling-gun arm for Barret. The rewards also include three Orchestrion Rolls featuring Final Fantasy 7 Gold Saucer music and boss themes, a Wind-up Barret minion, a Magitek Scorpion mount, a Framer’s Kit, and a Keybound Brawler emote.

During Keybound Brawler, players earn MGC, an event-specific currency, and spend it at the rewards vendor on items. The vendor is present only while the event runs. The event is live beginning Oct. 28, 2026, and ends when the 8.0 expansion launches in January 2027. Square Enix has not guaranteed it will return with the same designs.

Beyond the Lifestream is the larger Final Fantasy 7 collaboration: an eight-player raid series revealed at Fanfest Berlin in July 2026 after Square Enix showcased the Bastion job. Part one arrives in patch 8.01 once Evercold has launched in January 2027, and the full series begins in patch 8.1. The raid is not part of Evercold’s January 2027 launch. DualShockers reports uncertainty about how the patch times against Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s Spring 2027 release, saying it may land shortly before or after.

The raid offers three tiers: normal mode, savage mode, and a new difficulty between them. Barret and Tifa outfit sets await raiders, and Barret’s set adds an optional cosmetic gun-arm that cannot harm enemies.

Motomu Toriyama co-writes the raid’s story with the Final Fantasy XIV scenario team, Kazushige Nojima supervises the story, and Tetsuya Nomura supervises art design. The primary raid boss is expected to be Sephiroth. The official key art places a one-winged Sephiroth behind Midgar’s Shinra Tower.

Naoki Yoshida, the Final Fantasy XIV director, said he started the crossover himself by going to the Final Fantasy 7 Remake team. Yoshida said, “The timing would be really important.” He planned the crossover around the reveal of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which closes out the Remake trilogy. Yoshida said he serves on the board and knew the remake series was in development before he reached out to that team.

Reaction to the announcement split players. Some cited Final Fantasy 7 fatigue, while others saw the collaboration as a bid to win back players who left during Dawntrail. Dawntrail, the most recent expansion whose story was not as strong as previous expansions and which followed Endwalker, drove many players away from Final Fantasy 14, and some called two crossover raid series in Evercold too much. Many fans want to hear Masayoshi Soken’s version of One-Winged Angel.

Past crossovers include the Return to Ivalice raids linked to Final Fantasy 12, the NieR Automata raid series, a Final Fantasy 11 crossover during Dawntrail, and an Evangelion 24-player raid planned for Evercold. Return to Ivalice is a 24-person raid, and the NieR Automata series is equally large-scale.

Square Enix built the Keybound Brawler format so it accepts other collaboration themes. Square Enix plans to reuse the framework for future typing challenges, quiz battles, and trivia modes. Hamaguchi pointed to Dragon Quest as one theme the format could take.

Evercold will open in January 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. The expansion will feature two new classes. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation arrives in Spring 2027 and ends the remake project.

Fanfest Tokyo during the weekend of October 25, 2026, is expected to cover Evercold’s redesigned weekly progression, upgrades to battle content, and the second new job. Evolved Mode is not a focus. As of Oct. 28, 2026, Evercold’s exact release date remained unknown.
