Nano Park Studios and iam8bit set Petal Runner for a March 8, 2027 launch on Nintendo Switch 2 and PC via Steam. A free demo became available on the Nintendo Switch 2 eShop on October 28, 2026, the same day the Nintendo Indie World Showcase announced the release date. The demo gives players an early opportunity to try the game months before its confirmed launch window. During the showcase, the developers debuted a new trailer highlighting the Nintendo Switch 2 version.
The demo, also available on Steam, lets players explore North Valley, the second district of Sapphire Valley. North Valley is described as a coastal metropolis filled with good vibes, culture, characters, and jobs. It features minigames, hyper-detailed pixel streets, and never-before-seen HanaPets. While the Switch 2 demo launched with the announcement, the Steam version was already accessible, and no PC release date has been confirmed.
Players travel around Sapphire Valley on Cali’s motorcycle, planning delivery routes across highways and back roads. The job involves delivering and installing the newest generation of HanaPets, which are a core part of the game’s world and gameplay, throughout the city. Conversations with non-player characters (NPCs) can take place without getting off the bike. The game is a coming-of-age story set in a solarpunk, pixel-powered open world with Game Boy Color-era charm.
Sapphire Valley is a coastal city divided into four districts populated by humans, androids, and digital companions. The solarpunk-inspired world includes highways, back roads, and a vibrant urban environment. Players follow Cali and their companion Kira as they work to become Petal Runners, an elite crew of motorcycle couriers.
Beyond the main delivery gameplay, the game offers optional quests and minigames including ghost hunts, heists, missing persons investigations, and concerts that go wrong. The narrative centers on a larger mystery involving a corporation operating within Sapphire Valley, and Cali and Kira’s friendship drives the story as their work as couriers draws them into a corporate conspiracy. The game explores themes of life and loss alongside Cali and Kira’s everyday experiences. The game balances its lighthearted solarpunk setting with deeper emotional themes as Cali and Kira navigate their new lives as Petal Runners.
Brandon James Greer, Nano Park Studios co-founder and pixel artist known online as BJGpixel, created the game’s handcrafted pixel art and expressed excitement about bringing the game to Nintendo Switch 2 during the announcement. Danny Guo, the studio’s co-founder and programmer, said Nintendo’s famous pixel games inspired Petal Runner and expressed joy that Switch 2 players will get to enjoy it next year, emphasizing the Game Boy Color-era inspiration that shaped the game’s visual style and design.

The game’s visual style draws from classic Nintendo handheld games, which the developers cited as a key inspiration. Its narrative design also takes inspiration from classic video games and 1990s anime. These influences shape both the visual style and the storytelling tone of Petal Runner, blending retro game aesthetics with anime-inspired narrative elements.
The game features an original chiptune soundtrack that accompanies exploration and story sequences. The score enhances the retro aesthetic and complements the Game Boy Color-inspired visuals.
Adam Dolin, whose previous writing credits include God of War and Horizon Forbidden West, contributed to the story. Dolin brings his experience from major Sony titles to this indie project.
Petal Runner was originally announced for PC on Steam only before the developers expanded it to include a Nintendo Switch 2 version. Noisy Pixel reported a March 28, 2027 launch date for the Switch 2 version, contradicting the March 8 date confirmed by other outlets. The Switch 2 port was revealed alongside the demo and release date during the Indie World Showcase.
