Until Dawn 2 is scheduled to launch Jan. 28, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The game was first revealed at the PlayStation State of Play showcase on June 2, 2026, and its release date was announced at a subsequent State of Play on Sept. 3, 2026. The June showcase featured the first footage of the game and introduced its tropical setting and ghost hunter premise. The September event also took place at Alamo Drafthouse theaters and revealed the January release date.

Firesprite is developing Until Dawn 2 with assistance from the Dispatch studio AdHoc. The first-party PlayStation developer, which also created The Persistence, is building the sequel as a standalone experience with a brand new cast and an entirely different story set in a tropical location. The narrative follows The Dead True, a crew of ghost-hunting YouTubers who have never encountered anything supernatural until an investigation at Blackwood Sanitorium goes wrong. The crew is offered a TV deal to document the mysterious abandoned resort on the remote island.

This premise sets up the conflict between the crew’s staged scares and the real horrors they encounter on Akishima Island.

Peter Stormare will reprise his role as Dr. Hill, a character from the original Until Dawn game. The Butterfly Effect mechanic, where player choices dramatically alter the story, is returning for the sequel. The system allows every decision to change the story and determine who survives, with multiple possible endings. The trailer stated that everyone can live and everyone can die.

Alamo Drafthouse is an American cinema chain owned by Sony Pictures. The Dec. 11 event will be held at Alamo Drafthouse theaters. Instant Gaming News reported the venue as Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Austin, Texas. The September 2026 State of Play also took place at Alamo Drafthouse, establishing a pattern of Sony using the chain for major Until Dawn announcements.

The venue choice aligns with Sony’s ownership of the chain and its history of hosting previous PlayStation events.

Sony has been gradually revealing information about Until Dawn 2 by introducing each character individually ahead of the Dec. 11 event. The announcement serves as a follow-up to the Sept. 3 State of Play where the release date was revealed. The horror movie marathon format ties into the game’s cinematic, film-inspired DNA.

PPE_pl reported that Until Dawn 2 has been rated for mature audiences ahead of its January 2027 launch.

Beebom reported that Until Dawn 2 will be the last game in the series to receive a physical disc release, as PlayStation ends PS5 disc support starting in January 2028. The same outlet noted that the launch places the game roughly a month ahead of Sony’s PS5 exclusive God of War Laufey, expected on PS5. Until Dawn 2 is positioned as one of PlayStation’s first major releases of 2027, with God of War Laufey following about a month later.

Beebom reported that pre-orders for Until Dawn 2 opened on Sept. 10, 2026, via developer Firesprite. The pre-order launch came roughly a week after the release date was revealed at the September 3 State of Play. The Dec. 11 gameplay event is positioned as the final major preview before release.

The Firesprite team stated that building the Until Dawn 2 sequel has been a dream come true, as they are massive fans of the original game. The studio’s mission was to honor the original’s core DNA of character drama, tough choices, and unforgettable horror moments. The studio told fans to expect more information about the story, cast, and gameplay in the coming months.

The original Until Dawn was developed by Supermassive Games and set in a winter location. A remake of the original was released on PlayStation 5 shortly before the June 2026 State of Play reveal. A live-action Until Dawn film was released in 2025, expanding the franchise to another medium. The series is known for its cinematic, film-inspired horror style and the Butterfly Effect mechanic that allows player choices to dramatically alter the story.

The original game’s winter setting contrasts with the sequel’s tropical location.

Sony describes Until Dawn 2 as a modern horror experience filled with intrigue, emotion, twists, and choices that create an unsettling atmosphere. The game will not be available on previous PlayStation consoles. It is a PlayStation 5 exclusive title developed by first-party studio Firesprite.
