The original Tomb Raider arrived on October 24, 1996, for Sega Saturn, reaching PlayStation and PC in November 1996. Core Design developed the debut, which reached three platforms over roughly a month, and the franchise marked its 30th anniversary during the October 2026 weekend. The TR30 Derby and MCM London event marked the anniversary and showed a new trailer for the remake.
Amazon Game Studios released a one-minute gameplay trailer on October 25, 2026. The footage remakes four locations from the 1996 game – Peru, Greece, Egypt, and Atlantis – including the giant Atlas puzzle, Atlantean enemies, and the moment Lara transforms after touching King Midas’ statue. The trailer also shows a golden, cursed version of Lara from that encounter. These set pieces rank among the most memorable from the debut game and now appear with contemporary visual fidelity.
The showcase served as a sneak peek full of nostalgic moments with upgraded graphical realism.
The remake reimagines the 1996 debut instead of copying it scene for scene, keeping classic acrobatic gunfighting while adding modernized systems. Familiar puzzles are redefined with new mechanics and surprises. The developers are balancing nostalgia with innovation while keeping iconic moments intact. Lara searches for pieces of the Scion, an Atlantis artifact that could alter the fate of the world, and her journey takes her to Peru, Greece, Egypt, and a mysterious Mediterranean island filled with myths and secrets.
The story carries over the original 1996 game’s focus on the lost civilization of Atlantis.
A Focus meter fills when Lara takes damage, deals damage, or dodges, powering slowed-time acrobatics alongside skill trees and crafting. Game director Raul Siquera described the Focus system during a summer 2026 interview, explaining it as a way to let players perform the acrobatic moves Lara used in 1996 with modern timing and visual flair. “When you’re taking damage, dealing damage, dodging attacks, you’re building your Focus meter,” he said.
The Greece portion revisits St. Francis’ Folly, the Colosseum, Palace Midas, The Cistern, and Tomb Of Tihocan, with mercenary Pierre Dupont pursuing Lara on behalf of Natla. A dedicated trailer showed how these stages are being overhauled, and all five original stages are expected to be reimagined in the full game.
The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, and the studio expects it to support Lumen and Nanite rendering. The engine choice enables the overhauled visuals showcased in trailers. Alix Wilton Regan voices the new Lara Croft, representing a fresh direction for the character.
Pre-ordering grants Lara’s Survivor trilogy costume, while her default look remains the classic shorts and tank top. A separate free outfit unlocks before release, with more costumes available during play, continuing the series’ tradition of unlockable outfits including the classic tank top and shorts look. Deluxe and collector’s editions include 48-hour early access.
The PC version will not use Denuvo anti-tamper technology, and Amazon Games has published official PC system requirements ahead of launch. The ESRB rates the game Teen for Blood and Violence, and Steam Deck compatibility is unknown. Amazon Games publishes the single-player experience.
Crystal Dynamics also plans Tomb Raider: Catalyst for 2027, a Northern India story set after a mythical cataclysm awakens ancient forces. Both games are slated for the same year, and the studio describes Catalyst as a bold new direction for the series coming after Legacy of Atlantis.
The remake’s use of generative AI drew criticism, but Jeff Adams said the studio used it only to make placeholder assets for faster object visualization, not to produce final game content. The use of the technology became a point of public discussion among fans. He said the approach helped teams reach design decisions more quickly. “get to [the] right answer faster,” Adams said.
