COGconnected published its review of Charting the Unknown on Nov. 7, 2026, covering Crimson Desert’s first paid downloadable content pack, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Steam, Mac and the Epic Games Store.
The expansion costs $24.99. PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe members and Xbox Series X|S players can try Crimson Desert Enhanced free for five hours.
COGconnected’s review covers sailing, ship construction, sea battles, underwater discovery and treasure hunting. The expansion’s separate storylines follow Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane into a desert threat, a political conflict, a trip outside time, and a secret beneath the waves.
IGN’s review dated Oct. 30, 2026 found ship-to-ship combat, underwater exploration and romance among the worthwhile additions. The same review called the extra story missions uninspired retreads that do not improve on established shortcomings. IGN described mission objectives as bland retracing of steps, such as fishing with a familiar character or arm-wrestling someone for information. “Crimson Desert’s first paid DLC, called Charting the Unknown, prioritizes adding more on top of its already staggeringly large repertoire,” the IGN reviewer wrote.
Pearl Abyss announced the DLC in early September 2026, and it was first shown during a State of Play showcase that month. The pack, originally set for Oct. 15, 2026, launched Oct. 29, 2026 after the developer said they needed the two-week delay for a more polished and stable experience.
Crimson Desert launched Mar. 19, 2026 as a single-player game set on the continent of Pywel, which includes the snow-blasted mountains of Kweiden and the verdant expanses of Akapen. The base game begins with an ambush by the Black Bears that leaves the Greymanes dead or scattered. Pearl Abyss released significant free updates, fixes, improvements and new content over the months following launch. Update 2.0, the free Enhanced Edition, arrived in September 2026, collecting everything released so far and adding less restrictive character progression, an improved main story, New Game Plus and new skills.
COGconnected ties the game’s improved technical state to its post-launch support trajectory, noting that Crimson Desert is technically much better than at launch because of patches and updates. GameRant says the game launched to mixed critical reviews and caused a big hit to Pearl Abyss stock before rebounding. The COGconnected reviewer said, “I played Charting the Unknown on a high-end PC with DLSS 4.5 turned on, but not Ray Reconstruction.” DLSS and Ray Reconstruction are graphics rendering technologies.
IGN experienced two hard crashes, a character glitch during arm wrestling, and blurry or flickering textures during cutscenes in the DLC. The outlet said it is too early to tell whether the issues are consistent.
Gliding underwater on a sea turtle and captaining a pirate crew feel bizarre in the context of Crimson Desert but are compelling enough to keep playing, IGN said. Only around 10% of players reach the end of the base game, and IGN says the extra story missions open only after completing the dense main story.
Charting the Unknown lets players give gifts and flirt with many non-player characters, excluding the central trio, after building Trust to a high level, and to propose marriage at the same level. Pearl Abyss confirmed all three playable characters, Kliff, Oongka and Damiane, can romance non-player characters, though not every non-player character can be romanced.
The expansion greatly expands housing, letting players decide the placement of walls, windows and structural elements and the basic layout of a home. Players who liberate certain castles can decorate courtyards and interiors, and can lease and run facilities in liberated strongholds to build wealth through management. A GamingBolt guide dated Nov. 6, 2026 says Drakesfall Castle requires completion of the epilogue quest Journey’s End, while Flame Knights’ Castle requires Damiane’s DLC questline From The Ashes through the final quest Path of the Politician.
Rebuilding Drakesfall Castle requires dispatching 20 comrades with one construction specialist, 30,000 funds and 15 in-game days. Restoring Flame Knights’ Castle requires 20 comrades, 100,000 funds, 10,000 weapons, 10,000 provisions, 40,000 stone and 40,000 wood from the camp pool, and the reconstruction takes 15 days.
Players who pre-ordered the DLC receive Charter’s Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and Charter’s Light Diving Set for Damiane. Charting the Unknown expands the map to include northern regions and underwater exploration, and Crimson Desert is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.
Crimson Desert is not a sequel to Black Desert but a new IP that began as a prequel, and it carries an ESRB rating of Mature 17+ for Blood, Drug Reference, Intense Violence and Strong Language. How Long To Beat lists the base game at 54 hours, and the Xbox Series X|S version has a file size of 150 GB.
