GamingBolt published its review of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on Nov. 4, 2026, assessing the game’s sports lineup and motion controls on Nintendo Switch 2.
GamingBolt listed 12 sports: bowling, golf, tennis, boxing, archery, table tennis, basketball, power cruising, prop plane, volleyball, skateboarding and thumb wrestling. Siliconera said the game jumps to 12 minigames from the original five in Wii Sports, and that local Friend Lobbies hold eight players at once and can split into Huddles, with ranked matches inside each sport’s menu.

Polygon reported Oct. 20 that the game holds a 79 on Metacritic and an 83 on OpenCritic, though OpenCritic is missing some key reviews. The 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports peaked at 72, while Wii Sports Resort sits at 80, which the outlet suggested might be the series ceiling. The outlet also said Nintendo has had zero misses with first-party Switch 2 games in 2026, each reviewing at least pretty well.
GamingBolt called the game packed with content and polished, and said it restored the series’ charm and sense of place. The outlet described Switch Sports Resort as the first game since Wii Sports Resort to bring back the series’ charm, character and aesthetic. Wuhu Island returns as the setting with a changed layout, though it remains a tropical vacation getaway.
In solo play, players work through ranks to become Wuhu Island’s Champion for each sport. GamingBolt said most sports translate intuitively to Joy-Con motion controls, including tennis, volleyball, golf, bowling and archery.
GamingBolt flagged drift, since Switch 2 Joy-Con controllers use gyro-only tracking, unlike the Wii Remote, which combined infrared and an accelerometer. The outlet said the game compensates, but the controls remain less stable than on the original Wii.
Skateboarding uses the Joy-Con’s mouse mode: holding the controller in mouse mode and dragging it back builds speed, while tilting steers. GamingBolt said it resembles Drag x Drive but is simpler and more fun, though Pure Nintendo said the steady flicking can prove tiresome in practice.
Sightseeing Tours are exclusive to prop plane, power cruising and skateboarding, sending players around Wuhu Island for photo opportunities and island missions. GamingBolt said the tours add connective tissue that makes the island feel authentic and restores the character the series had lost. The outlet concluded that a new Wii Sports game could offer nothing more, calling the title fun, accessible, content-packed and polished with no caveats attached.
Polygon’s Oct. 20 roundup included GameSpot’s Kurt Indovina at 9 out of 10, praising the variety and tighter controls, and IGN’s Jesse Vitelli at 7 out of 10, criticizing hit-and-miss minigames while noting the game stays fun with friends. ComicBook.com gave 4 out of 5 on Oct. 21, and Eurogamer’s Matt Wales gave four stars, praising the leisure sports on open-world Wuhu Island and calling skateboarding his possible favorite.
Pure Nintendo reviewed the game on Nov. 2 and rated it Very Good. The outlet said Prop Plane controls best and is the most fun of the trio of exploratory events, while skateboarding’s mouse controls can tire players out and thumb wrestling is a fun enough novelty that feels out of place.
Pure Nintendo said bowling seems more challenging, tennis still forces doubles play with a clone, and golf has sensitive putting with a hole count stuck in the 20s; players can now choose their tennis surface rather than drawing one at random. Boxing returns for a third time despite its reputation as the worst of the original sports, and its tutorial failed to recognize a third dodge.
Archery, table tennis, basketball and power cruising return for the first time in 17 years, Pure Nintendo said, while volleyball remains an overly long event even at five points. The outlet said Nintendo would have done well to borrow from Bandai Namco’s Go Vacation, which offers more vehicles, on-foot exploration and collectibles across four resorts.
Pure Nintendo’s Justin said, “I found it a little more fun to spend the practice time going around and exploring the island.” The outlet also said players can use original Switch Joy-Cons with the game, save for mouse-controlled skateboarding.
ComicBook.com’s reviewer was 12 when the Wii launched in 2006 and said playing with children ages six and 11 made for one of the most nostalgic and joyful experiences of 2026. The outlet said thumb wrestling and skateboarding are the only wholly new sports and that the mouse controls never feel great during skateboarding.
ComicBook.com said 12 sports is a bit less than it would have preferred, though the roster kept the reviewer’s family busy for hours and left them longing for the next session. The outlet noted it received an advance copy from Nintendo for the review.
Siliconera described Spocco Resort as a series of islands with 12 activities at different spots and said Badminton, Baseball and Chambara are absent while Table Tennis basically replaces Badminton. Daily play rewards 1,000 Spocco Points once per day, and one pull costs 1,000 points for a random item, with duplicates impossible. Island Crown matches players against increasingly difficult NPCs (non-player characters) for challenges and cosmetics.
Casual Online Play rounds out multiplayer alongside Friend Lobbies. Archery, Boxing, Golf and Thumb Wrestling offer only a single match, while Tennis adds Laid-Back Match, Volleyball offers Bump to the Beat, Table Tennis has a Return Challenge.
Siliconera said Power Cruising sometimes felt weaker because motion controls could make turns difficult, while Prop Plane was fun in every mode. The outlet found basic Volleyball boring. Sightseeing Tour and Free Play modes for Prop Plane, Power Cruising and Skateboarding offer exploration.
