This is a new development in a story we reported earlier: Rockstar releases Grand Theft Auto VI launch trailer ahead of November launch.
Key facts
- Rockstar Games' first Grand Theft Auto VI TV commercial aired on October 20, 2026, during NBC Sports' broadcast of the New York Knicks versus Philadelphia 76ers NBA opening-night game, according to viewers who filmed it.
- The television spot is a cut-down version of the Grand Theft Auto VI launch trailer that Rockstar Games released on October 15, 2026, which runs about 90 seconds.
- The commercial does not show the Xbox logo and ends with PlayStation branding only, even though Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, putting the October 20 television ad about four weeks before release.
Rockstar Games aired its first Grand Theft Auto VI television commercial on October 20, 2026, during NBC Sports’ NBA opening-night broadcast of the New York Knicks versus the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden.
The spot is a cut-down version of the Grand Theft Auto VI launch trailer that Rockstar released on October 15, 2026, which runs about 90 seconds. It reuses that footage with some scenes removed and others extended to fill a fixed broadcast length. Viewers also noticed extra frames in the moment when Jason jokingly punches Lucia’s arm, and more frames of Lucia leaping off a truck onto a plane’s landing gear.
The ad cut intimate shower scenes involving Jason and Lucia, but outlets disagree on the number. IGN says all three were cut, while TalkEsport and Kotaku say the first shower shot remains and only the later two were removed. The TV spot cuts the shower kiss between Jason and Lucia, and Lucia’s ankle tag, a hint she is out on parole, is gone as well.
According to TalkEsport, the edit was likely made for a prime-time NBA broadcast, which reaches a broader and younger audience than a YouTube trailer behind an age gate; guns, car chases and robberies stayed in while only intimate scenes were cut. According to Kotaku, the ad kept guns, explosions, robbery and violence, yet bare legs in a shower were judged too spicy for broadcast television.
The TV spot omits the Xbox logo and closes with PlayStation branding alone, even though Grand Theft Auto VI is releasing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The fine print at the end lists only PlayStation, not Xbox, and Rockstar’s YouTube page for the launch trailer links to the PlayStation Store but not the Xbox Store. That Xbox omission comes from an unspecified and undisclosed PlayStation marketing deal with Rockstar for Grand Theft Auto VI.
IGN said casual fans who discover Grand Theft Auto VI from a TV advert on live sports might conclude PlayStation is the only place to play, which is what Sony hopes for from its partnership.
Xbox CSO Matthew Ball said Microsoft was pleased with Grand Theft Auto VI preorders and that internal figures showed they matched its console-market share. A report cited by The Verge’s Tom Warren claimed preorders were heavily skewed toward PlayStation 5 over Xbox Series X and S, and IGN said Microsoft stepped in to address the preorder report amid news of layoffs and studio reorganization at Xbox.
Xbox fans are concerned about performance on Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S because the game has only been shown running on PlayStation 5. ComicBook.com states the game has only been shown running on PlayStation 5 and not on Xbox Series X, though the outlet says it is safe to assume the Xbox Series X version performs the same as the PS5 version given console parity and Rockstar’s reputation.
Rockstar has paired the broadcast push with real-world marketing in Miami, including Burger Shot restaurants at the Kaseya Center and flashy GTA-branded sports cars driven around the city with camera crews. Rockstar placed a Welcome to Vice City sign on the Kaseya Center roof and received approval for a Grand Theft Auto VI marketing campaign on Miami Beach. A large Grand Theft Auto VI banner on a Les Mercuriales tower near Paris took the guns off the cover art, but U.S. murals left them in place.

On November 18, 2026, the night before launch, the Miami Heat will face the Milwaukee Bucks as Vice City with custom courts and uniforms on national ESPN. The Heat said Vice City activities would begin on NBA opening night, the same evening the ad ran. TalkEsport said additional TV airings are likely through November and identified the Heat’s Vice City game as the clear spot for the next commercial.
Viewers began posting about the ad about half an hour after the 7 p.m. ET tip-off, and the first social media post came from PunksWorldd at 12:28 a.m. UK time. A fan named BrizzyDaGoat filmed a clip at 1:23 a.m. UK time and said the spot played again, confirming it ran at least twice. Barstool Sports shared footage of viewers reacting to the commercial, and the clip passed 48,000 views in roughly 35 minutes.
GTA YouTuber GameRoll described the spot as “Nothing crazy, it’s literally just the launch trailer.” Rockstar Games has not announced a TV campaign for Grand Theft Auto VI, and it has not commented on the ad or explained the edit. Rockstar took a similar route before Red Dead Redemption 2’s October 2018 launch, running TV spots that reused trailer footage, including one that ran 30 seconds.
Grand Theft Auto VI releases on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, so the October 20 TV spot landed about four weeks before launch. Fans also saw the spot during Pistons versus Celtics and Thunder versus Spurs on October 20, 2026. More than one cut is in rotation, including a 60-second version, RockstarINTEL reported.
TalkEsport reported on October 5, 2026, that a Reddit user had spotted a 45-second GTA VI TV spot on a news station’s internal schedule with no air date, and Yahoo Tech covered a deleted Reddit post on October 6, 2026, showing a Fox affiliate schedule with the same line. No one connected that Reddit post to an actual broadcast.
NBCUniversal said the previous NBA opening night reached a peak of 7.1 million viewers across NBC and Peacock. The Knicks raised a championship banner on NBC as the commercial aired.
