Amazon’s Mass Effect television series remains in development at Prime Video after Electronic Arts shut down BioWare and canceled the studio’s in-development Mass Effect game in late October 2026, according to people close to the production who spoke anonymously with IGN for its October 2026 report. Game Informer published the same report.
Electronic Arts cut three percent of its workforce and shuttered BioWare, the legendary RPG studio, in late October 2026, ending work on a new Mass Effect role-playing game in early development and eliminating the game’s chances of release, according to reporting from Game Informer and Gizmodo. Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier confirmed in late October 2026 that a leaked trailer for the canceled game was real, making it the only surviving glimpse of the project.
All creative personnel attached to the series remain involved despite the closure, according to people close to the production cited by IGN in October 2026. Doug Jung is the showrunner, the top creative manager on a television series, and Daniel Casey is the writer; both were attached as of August 2025. Jung’s credits include The Cloverfield Paradox and Star Trek Beyond, while Casey wrote F9: The Fast Saga.
Karim Zreik, Avi Arad and Mike Gamble are listed as executive producers as of August 2025. Zreik was an executive producer on Jessica Jones, Arad is a former head of Marvel Studios, and Gamble was the Mass Effect series executive producer at BioWare. Gamble’s specific role after the closure is unclear because he served as a guiding voice from BioWare, though reports indicate he remains involved.
The series will tell an original story set after the original Mass Effect trilogy rather than retelling Commander Shepard’s story, an approach Mike Gamble discussed during the Nov. 7, 2025, N7 Day announcement. “The show will explore a brand-new story within the universe’s timeline, and will be set after the original trilogy,” Gamble said. Setting the story after the trilogy sidesteps issues arising from the games‘ branching player choices.
Amazon MGM Studios began developing the Mass Effect series in 2024, and Prime Video formally announced the television series that year, following earlier unsuccessful attempts to adapt Mass Effect for live-action dating back to 2021. Production was reportedly scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, but IGN notes no date is currently in place; the series remains in early development, has no confirmed release window and has not yet begun filming.
As of April 2026, Amazon had not granted the series a formal series order, or official commitment to produce a full season, according to The Ankler’s reporting cited by Gizmodo. The Ankler reported the lack of a series order alongside the April 2026 rewrite news. IGN’s October 2026 report did not specify whether Amazon had since granted an order, and it did not clarify the current status of the scripts.
The Ankler reported in April 2026 that Peter Friedlander, Amazon’s head of global television, wanted the Mass Effect scripts rewritten to appeal more to non-gamers, according to Gizmodo. GosuGamers, which also carried The Ankler’s report, quoted Friedlander as seeking scripts “more appealing to non-gamers.” PlayStation Universe added that Friedlander was reviewing scripts to make firm decisions on projects including Mass Effect.
Daniel Casey, the writer, disputed the claim on Bluesky, writing that “at no point has that been said to me.”
The future of the Mass Effect video game franchise is uncertain after BioWare’s closure in late October 2026, according to PlayStation Universe. With the next Mass Effect game canceled, it remains unknown whether Electronic Arts will sell the intellectual property or keep it dormant, as it did with Dead Space.
Amazon is developing other video game adaptations alongside Mass Effect. The slate includes a third season of Fallout starring Aaron Paul, a God of War series with Dave Bautista, a Tomb Raider series with Sophie Turner, and projects based on Life is Strange, Wolfenstein and Warhammer 40,000.
