The game was essentially inactive throughout most of the last five years, with matches few and far between. Players who purchased the game can continue until January 31, 2027, after which they cannot access the game on any platform, according to an official Amazon Games announcement cited by GameRant. Amazon Games said, “Players who have purchased the game will be able to continue playing until January 31, 2027, when the game’s servers are permanently taken offline.”

New World launched on September 28, 2021, and its console version Aeternum launched on October 15, 2024, according to GameRant. New World struggled to maintain a player base large enough to justify and cover its costs. The closure followed Amazon layoffs in its gaming department.

Hawked servers closed on September 7, 2026, according to The Tech Edvocate. GRID Legends online services ceased on September 11, 2026, and Sociable Soccer 25 servers powered down on September 28, 2026. Players expressed sadness, frustration and resignation on forums, social media and dedicated subreddits about those shutdowns.

Server shutdowns occur because maintaining online servers is a significant ongoing expense involving server costs, network infrastructure, maintenance, security updates and dedicated staff, according to The Tech Edvocate. Licensing agreements for music, intellectual property or middleware can expire, and renewing them can be so expensive that publishers sometimes let the license lapse and shut down the game instead. Server infrastructure ages, and keeping compatibility with newer operating systems, security protocols or console updates pulls engineering resources from current projects.

Customer support, moderation against cheating or toxic behavior, and community management generate overhead that persists regardless of player count, according to The Tech Edvocate. Digital-only purchases for online-only games often become meaningless for the core experience when servers shut down, unlike physical discs for games with offline components. Publishers state that digital purchases grant a license rather than permanent ownership and that online services can end, making refunds unavailable except rare partial refunds soon after launch.

Frank Cifaldi, founder of the Video Game History Foundation, stated that the industry loses games faster than it preserves them, according to The Tech Edvocate. Dr. Raiford Guins, who studies media archaeology and game history, emphasizes that games are cultural artifacts. Online-only games are interactive services rather than static content like movies, TV shows or e-books, which remain accessible after purchase. Private servers or emulated servers for older online PC games are rare on consoles because of stricter platform restrictions and technical complexity.

Seven games were set to turn off servers between November 10, 2025 and the end of 2025, according to GAMINGbible citing PureXbox. PUBG: Battlegrounds for Xbox One and PS4 lost its native servers on November 13, 2025, but players on older consoles can still play via a current-gen upgrade using Smart Delivery.

Battlestar Galactica Deadlock will disappear from the Xbox store and every other digital storefront after a dispute related to the game’s publisher, according to GAMINGbible.
