Dragon Ranger Gaming beat Rare Atom 2-0 on 21 October at 12:00 UK time, the opening day of Week 1 at VCT Threshold China. Esports Insider reported that the victory keeps Dragon Ranger Gaming’s bid alive for one of the event’s 2027 league places. The HUB Performing Arts Center hosts the Week 1 single-elimination bracket, a best-of-three event running 21 to 25 October.
Dragon Ranger Gaming will play FunPlus Phoenix on Friday 23 October in Week 1. Week 1’s semi-finals take place on 24 October, with the final following on 25 October. Week 2 follows from 27 October to 1 November.
The result contradicted the teams’ Elo positions. Dragon Ranger Gaming entered with a 1461 Elo rating, ranked 208th, and a 49-54 record from 103 rated matches. Rare Atom held a 1622 Elo rating, ranked 74th, with a 22-11 record in 33 matches.
Rare Atom picked Summit in the map veto (pick-and-ban) and Dragon Ranger Gaming chose Lotus, leaving Sunset as the unused decider. Summit lasted 46 minutes, and Dragon Ranger Gaming closed out Lotus in 48 minutes.
The sweep ended a difficult stretch for Dragon Ranger Gaming. The team lost 0-2 to Any Questions Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 3 2026 immediately before Threshold. It had also lost 1-2 to Trace Esports and 1-2 to TEC Esports in VCT China Stage 2 2026.
Dragon Ranger Gaming beat Wolves Esports and JD Gaming, both 2-1, in VCT China Stage 2 2026. The team had beaten Rare Atom 3-0 at VCT Ascension China 2025 on 19 October 2025. Rare Atom came into Shanghai after a 0-2 defeat to JD Gaming in China Evolution Series Act 1 2026.
Other opening matches also ended in sweeps. Unsettled Resentment beat Octagonal Disposition Gaming 2-0, Any Questions Gaming beat World Sports Invictus Gaming 2-0, and Wolves Esports beat A Team 2-0.
The Week 1 bracket includes five VCT China teams alongside seven national teams. Teams that lose in Week 1 move on to a Week 2 playoff that adds one national team, so Rare Atom remains in the race after its opening defeat.
For the 2027-2028 cycle, VCT China’s partner-team count falls from 10 to eight. FunPlus Phoenix, Nova Esports, Titan Esports Club, and Wolves Esports lost partner status. Sheep Esports reported that Dragon Ranger Gaming held a VCT China guest slot but was not chosen as one of the region’s partners for 2027-2028.
Threshold takes the place of Valorant Challengers in China and ends the Nationals season. The 2027 China Kickoff lineup will consist of eight partner teams, two visitor teams, and two Open Qualifier teams.
