Key facts

  • The reveal included no release date, platforms, price, or pre-order date.
  • Eight years passed between the 2018 pre-production tease and the November 2026 title reveal.
  • Bethesda Game Studios developed the role-playing game and Bethesda Softworks publishes it.
  • Bethesda also released a separate, much shorter video devoted only to the The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel title card.

Bethesda Game Studios gave its next mainline Elder Scrolls game the official name The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel on November 3, 2026, releasing the title through an anniversary video and Xbox Wire post eight years after the E3 2018 pre-production tease.

Bethesda Softworks’ YouTube channel carried an anniversary video that walks through studio history before showing the new logo, and the publisher also released a much shorter video devoted only to the title card. Xbox Wire editor-in-chief Joe Skrebels shared the logo in the outlet’s official name reveal post, which offered neither world footage nor gameplay nor a store listing.

The reveal trailer featured swirling sand and a glowing scroll rising from the sand, followed by the logo and a closing written message, arriving alongside the studio’s 40th anniversary. Bethesda revealed no launch date, platforms, price, or pre-order details, and Bethesda has offered no timing for any future look at the game.

The official Bethesda Game Studios account marked the moment on X with an invitation to guess the name, while Bethesda Softworks issued a fan message celebrating 40 years of exploring new worlds and telling stories. Bethesda Game Studios serves as developer on the role-playing game, while Bethesda Softworks handles publishing.

Within the series lore, Sentinel is part of Hammerfell, the homeland of the Redguard, and it sits on the Iliac Bay between High Rock and Hammerfell. Players previously visited Hammerfell in The Elder Scrolls Online, in Daggerfall, and in the 1998 game The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard.

Some coverage expects the game to be set around Sentinel City in Hammerfell near the Iliac Bay between High Rock and Hammerfell, but Bethesda has not confirmed the setting or story. An October 29 report from The Verge, covered by VGC, said the game would carry the name Sentinel, take place in Hammerfell, and focus on the history and secrets of the Elder Scrolls.

The trailer ends with a passage attributed to Yazar, a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, carrying the in-game date 4E 206 according to Gematsu as cited by VideoGamer. The passage reads: “The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate.”

Bruce Nesmith, who led design on Skyrim, hopes for boats and seafaring play tied to Hammerfell’s spot on the Iliac Bay, though the source calls his remark a veteran’s wish list rather than an announced feature.

Todd Howard said in March 2026 that he wishes he had not revealed The Elder Scrolls 6 in 2018. Skyrim came out in 2011 and reaches its 15th anniversary on November 11, 2026, after more than a decade as the series’ last numbered entry.

Two dates sit next on the calendar: Skyrim’s 15th birthday on November 11, 2026, and Xbox FanFest in Seattle on November 12, 2026, though Bethesda has linked neither event to Sentinel.

Jason Schreier of Bloomberg wrote on Bluesky that more than two years remain before The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel arrives, quoting himself with “Sorry to say this game is still more than 2 years away!” Ryan McCaffrey of IGN places the release years away, at minimum two more years from now, and Bethesda has provided no release window.

Ryan McCaffrey places Sentinel in the context of Xbox’s recent exclusivity moves. Morrowind arrived on consoles only through the original Xbox in 2002, skipping PlayStation entirely. Oblivion was set to launch with the Xbox 360 but missed day one, debuted in March 2006 as part of the HD Era, and stayed exclusive to Xbox until the PS3 version came out in March 2007. Skyrim went multiplatform in 2011 and has moved more than 65 million copies.

Ryan McCaffrey reports that Asha Sharma has pledged more Xbox exclusives, starting with Gears of War: E-Day in 2026 and inXile’s Clockwork Revolution in 2027. Almost 100 million PlayStation 5 consoles sit in households around the world. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle stayed exclusive to Xbox Series X for several months before expanding, while Avowed and South of Midnight reached PlayStation 5 following a one-year exclusivity window. Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War Reloaded launched on multiple platforms at the same time.

Ryan McCaffrey says hardware now costs about double what it did at Skyrim’s launch, and Grand Theft Auto 5 stands as the second-best-selling game ever at 230 million copies sold. Sentinel calls for about five years of work from a large triple-A studio plus many support studios. Todd Howard once attempted to set a release date for Starfield, and that effort did not succeed.

Polygon says Blizzard used BlizzCon in September to unveil Diablo 5 and a StarCraft shooter reboot, with release windows of spring 2029 for Diablo 5 and 2030 for StarCraft. Polygon also points to a report from The Information last month that Microsoft weighed selling all of Xbox while private equity firms examined the idea, though Microsoft is said to be focusing on Asha Sharma’s restructure instead of an Xbox sell-off.

Asha Sharma has talked publicly about building cross-media adaptations for Xbox franchises, and Polygon calls The Elder Scrolls a major Xbox property with relatively few adaptations. Among Sharma’s first steps as CEO was assigning a codename to the next Xbox console even as a computer memory crisis clouded its future.

Yahoo Tech expects Sentinel to be the first Elder Scrolls game focused on the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, and reporting points to Hammerfell as the setting. Players could find secrets linked to ancient artifacts in the game.
