Sony Interactive Entertainment confirmed Until Dawn 2 will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 on January 28, 2027. The sequel is a standalone single-player experience with a brand-new cast and a whole new world to explore, so newcomers do not need to play the first game. Peter Stormare reprises Dr. Hill as the only returning character from the original.
The story follows Dead True, a team of ghost-hunting YouTubers whose scares are mostly staged for their online audience, as they head to an abandoned island to film their first fully funded episode. The tropical South Pacific location, Akishima Island, serves as the setting.
Before reaching the island, the Dead True crew visits Blackwood Sanatorium, a major location from the original game, to film an episode about events from 12 years earlier. New intern Izzy, played by Sarah Catherine Hook, discovers something there that changes the crew’s plans. The group later travels to HorrorCon in Sydney, Australia, before becoming involved with Yoona, a survivor of a supernatural entity who draws them toward the island. In the original game, Rami Malek played Joshua Washington, and Dr. Hill spoke with the player between chapters as Josh’s condition got worse.
Eight members of Dead True are playable, including Dacre Montgomery as Owen, Gavin Leatherwood as Luke, and Tanner Buchanan as Cameron. Neil Newbon also appears as Sebastian. The Butterfly Effect system returns, and everyone can live or die depending on the choices the player makes. Several thrilling endings can be unlocked.
From a third-person perspective, players control different characters through exploration, dialogue, and encounters with enemies interspersed with cinematic sequences. At key moments, time-sensitive inputs determine which group members survive to see the end of the night. Decisions in conversations and actions influence relationships and the further course of the story.
Until Dawn 2 remains a single-player-only experience, even though developer Supermassive Games has implemented co-op in its other titles. Dispatch’s AdHoc Studio is helping with the narrative on the Firesprite-developed sequel.
The game is enhanced for PS5 Pro, with PSSR2 upscaling and advanced ray tracing. PS5 owners will see 4K visuals plus haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support through the DualSense controller. Load times disappear on the SSD, while 3D Audio support builds an immersive experience.

Sony lists Until Dawn 2 as exclusive to PlayStation 5, and no PC version has been announced. GamingBolt notes the first game’s remake is available on PC.
In the US, the Standard Edition costs $49.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition costs $59.99. GamingBolt reports the game is launching for $50. Pre-orders for both editions opened on September 10 on the PlayStation Store.
Those who pre-order either version get two Dr. Hill costumes, a classic Until Dawn outfit, an Akishima Island outfit, and in-game bobblehead collectibles. The Digital Deluxe Edition includes the Y2K Neon Vibes Pack, dressing all eight playable characters in neon outfits, plus Dioramas of Death, a gallery where players can revisit each death.
The Entertainment Software Rating Board has rated the game Mature 17+ for blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes, strong language, and drug use. Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority has rated it M18, with a classification justification describing decapitations, the splitting of bodies in two, violent severing of limbs including a character having a lung violently removed, mutilated corpses, disfigured animal carcasses, visible skeletal remains, extensive blood spatter, and characters impaled by creatures or torn apart. It also notes marijuana use and romance between two women, with kissing, hugging, and implied intimacy before the screen fades to black.
Sony will host a special appearance at Alamo Drafthouse on December 11, 2026, where attendees will see an exclusive gameplay showcase and enjoy a horror movie marathon. Sony Pictures owns Alamo Drafthouse. The showcase will also be available via livestream, and Push Square reports the event will include special talent appearances.
In June 2026, Firesprite revealed Until Dawn 2 as a new story about Dead True, paranormal content creators who stage encounters for their videos. A new trailer shown during PlayStation’s State of Play on September 3, 2026, established stronger ties between the two games. The trailer reconfirmed Peter Stormare as Dr. Hill and showed Blackwood Sanatorium, and Sony has been introducing each character one at a time to build interest.
