Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches Thursday, October 22, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch 2 system.

Nintendo released the launch trailer on October 21, 2026. The video runs approximately seven and a half minutes and showcases the Wuhu Island sports lineup. The overview trailer provides a comprehensive look at the game’s features and activities.

The twelve sports pair off as boxing and table tennis, archery and tennis, volleyball and bowling, basketball and golf, thumb wrestling and skateboarding, plus power cruising and prop plane. Nintendo Everything and Anime News Network published the list ahead of the October 22 release, while Bleeding Cool described thirteen total sports, activities and minigames when including jump rope. A jump rope minigame serves as a warm-up before players take on the island’s activities.

Nintendo designed the motion controls, so players wield the Joy-Con 2 as bows, rackets, handlebars and other sports equipment, with movements copying real-life actions across each discipline. Players can swing or point the controller to mirror actions such as drawing a bow or swinging a racket.

For skateboarding, the Joy-Con 2 works in mouse mode with the controllers placed flat on a surface; players pull back to build speed, flick to jump and tilt to steer.

Island Crown mode is a single-player ladder in which players face top-ranked Island Champions for a chance to challenge an Island Legend. The mode serves as a new competitive addition to the sports lineup on Wuhu Island.

Three leisure modes—skateboarding, power cruising and prop plane—let players explore Wuhu Island freely, and scattered cameras mark photo spots around the island. These activities provide sightseeing opportunities across land, sea and sky, and Spocco Photos share information about notable locations.

Local multiplayer lets family and friends gather in the living room, and online lobbies can be created so friends play exclusively with each other. Sortirapariscom reported local play for up to four players and online competition against players worldwide.

Players select Sportsmate or Mii avatars and unlock clothing, sporting equipment, hairstyles and more with Spocco Points earned through online or offline play. The Item Center rotates its offerings on a weekly and monthly basis, giving players recurring chances to get new items. They can also customize Sportsmate body types, hairstyles, outfits and accessories, and create a Mii character on the Nintendo Switch 2 or bring over an existing Mii. The game offers extensive character customization options.

Alternative minigames include a table tennis challenge where players must hit every can, and a bowling challenge where players attempt to topple 100 pins. These minigames add variety and challenge beyond the standard sports.

Nintendo first announced the game in June 2026. Nintendo revealed the title earlier in the year ahead of its fall launch. A Nintendo Direct livestream on October 21, 2026, revealed the game.

Nintendo Switch Sports Resort succeeds Wii Sports Resort, a Wii title that arrived for the system in Japan during June 2009 and in the West during July 2009 while introducing Wii MotionPlus technology. The original featured 12 sports: Swordplay, Wakeboarding, Frisbee, Archery, Basketball, Table Tennis, Golf, Bowling, Power Cruising, Canoeing, Cycling, and Air Sports.

The original Wii Sports launched in 2006 as a bundled game with the Wii, including Tennis, Baseball, Bowling, Golf, and Boxing. The series began with this launch title. Anime News Network traced the series history from the original Wii Sports in 2006 through Nintendo Switch Sports. Wii Sports Resort set the stage for the new resort.

Nintendo Switch Sports launched in April 2022 and later expanded to eight sports, including soccer, volleyball, bowling, tennis, badminton, chambara, golf, and basketball. The 2022 entry introduced customizable Sportsmates avatars and serves as the immediate predecessor to the new island resort title.

Wuhu Island appeared in Wii Fit, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Wuhu Island is a recurring location in Nintendo games.

As of October 20, 2026, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort holds a Metacritic score of 79, exceeding Nintendo Switch Sports at 72 and matching the general level of Wii Sports Resort at 80. Polygon’s review roundup collected critic responses.

On October 20, 2026, GameSpot awarded the game a 9/10 score, and reviewer Kurt Indovina called it a “greatest hits of the series’ best sports.” The review praised the variety and tighter motion controls.

On October 20, 2026, Eurogamer gave the game a 4-star review, praising the leisure sports that allow players to roam an open-world Wuhu Island. Game Informer gave it an 8/10, noting that the minigames have diminishing returns at higher skill levels and finding the single-player mode revealing the game’s limits. IGN issued a 7/10, criticizing the hit-and-miss nature of the minigames while noting the series is still a joy to play with friends. Polygon’s Oli Welsh described the game as a work of genius of casual gaming.
