Xbox made the free METRO Redux Next-Gen Update available for Xbox Series X|S consoles on October 29, 2026.
The free package covers Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux together. Players who download it can run both games at true 4K resolution at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps. The update also adds 4A TSR upscaling and antialiasing for a sharper image, alongside more detailed textures, a refined lighting and shadow system, richer environmental detail, and enhanced animation fidelity.
Xbox said 4A Games tuned every change to preserve the look and feel of the original games, and 4A Games states the update is not a remake or a remaster. The update includes Xbox Play Anywhere, letting players access the games across devices. Xbox controller Impulse Triggers provide tactile feedback meant to increase tension, and Xbox Ally and Ally X owners receive full support and optimization through the update.
Spatial Audio is supported on eligible Xbox platforms. On PC, 4A Games released the update on October 22, 2026, ahead of the console release. The PC patch removes the frame rate cap and adds AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS, and 4A TSR. Enabling DLSS unlocks a Neural Rendering setting in the video settings, and the patch adds Screen Space Global Illumination, more detailed geometry, higher-quality textures, 4K texture support, and improved PBR materials.
Spatial audio and Advanced PhysX are included on PC, with PhysX enabled by default. The patch improves stability on Windows 11, AMD GPUs, and high-refresh-rate displays, and fixes crashes at startup and during chapter changes plus freezes at splash and loading screens. It also fixes black screens, endless loading, and crashes tied to newer graphics drivers.
Display fixes cover missing screen resolutions, broken fullscreen mode, stretched images, and wrong aspect ratios. Visual fixes address flickering shadows, shimmering textures, unstable ambient occlusion, broken post-processing, pixelated bloom, missing volumetric lighting, broken shadows, and white halos around objects.
Gameplay fixes stop weapons from locking in an endless reload loop if players interrupt burning cobwebs, prevent enemies from spotting through walls or in the dark, and end toxic-air deaths even while wearing a gas mask. Save fixes cover missing and corrupted saves, old checkpoints loading by mistake, checkpoint crashes, and reliability when quitting during a save, and the patch stops checkpoints when filter time is too low. Control fixes restore default keyboard bindings, fix mouse sensitivity, resolve DualSense and Xbox controller detection and remapping problems, and free mouse cursors stuck at screen edges on multi-monitor setups.
The update adds DualSense adaptive triggers, and a power-optimized mode covers Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X, and the Microsoft Store version. The Epic Games Store version gains Epic Online Services integration for achievements and accounts. Steam Cloud can now upload save data as intended. Metro 2033 Redux also receives a fix for a frozen Demon in Outpost, performance improvements in Torchlight, and a fix for a broken weapon collection at the start, while Metro: Last Light Redux receives a fix for a boss-fight blocker in The Garden and restored stealth takedowns from the Revolution chapter onward.
More than 50 million players have explored the METRO series since the first game launched in 2010, and Deep Silver confirmed the series reached 50 million sales. Xbox Wire said the universe has drawn a passionate following over 16 years and that the update lets veterans see familiar worlds with fresh eyes while giving newcomers a modern refresh ahead of Metro 2039. Xbox Wire also described the games as featuring acclaimed atmospheric storytelling and iconic, intense stealth-action gameplay.
Deep Silver said 4A Games incorporated community-led bug fixes and quality-of-life features based on player feedback. The original Metro 2033 Redux dates to 2014, and the patch also updates the game’s PC requirements.
Metro 2039 is scheduled to launch on February 4, 2027, and its last public glimpse came at Gamescom 2026. The sequel is set to support ray-tracing and path-tracing.
Wccftech reported that METRO 2033 and Last Light Redux are the second and third games to officially support NVIDIA DLSS 5‘s Neural Rendering, while TweakTown reported Metro 2033 Redux as the second game after NBA 2K27.
