Key facts

  • WoW Forever uses a realmless approach within each rule set, so players choose a rule set instead of selecting a realm.
  • Blizzard retains an emergency lever to merge rule sets later if player populations require it, including linked auction houses or grouped instanced content, as a last resort.
  • The four announced rule sets are Normal, PvP, Roleplay, and Hardcore, with Hardcore marked as arriving later and coming post-launch.
  • Each rule set functions like one large realm with separate dungeons, raids, mail, an auction house, and outdoor areas.

Blizzard confirmed that PvE, PvP and roleplaying rule sets will remain separate when World of Warcraft Forever launches on Nov. 4, 2026. The studio is keeping an emergency lever to bring them back together later if player populations require it.

The game opens with Normal, PvP and Roleplay rule sets, while Hardcore arrives later after launch. Normal lets players choose when to fight others. PvP leaves characters exposed to opposing players most of the time, and Roleplay enforces strict naming and behavior rules. Hardcore features permanent death, and dead characters can transfer to another rule set, including PvP.

Hardcore keeps a separate pool of items earned there.

Blizzard is dropping traditional realms inside each rule set. Instead of picking a server, players select a rule set. Every rule set works as a single large realm, but keeps dungeons, raids, mail, auctions and outdoor zones separate. Factions remain divided, and players can only form dungeon and raid groups within their chosen rule set.

Names must be unique across a region, and every character needs a first and last name. The Preferred Online Language setting pairs players who use English, LatAm Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese, applies across the account, and changes on a one-day cooldown.

For PvP, Blizzard will add balance mechanisms for Horde and Alliance populations like those used in Season of Discovery. Collections and the Legacy system stay account-wide across Normal, PvP and Roleplay. Hardcore keeps a separate pool of items.

Because of layering, players will not see everyone at the same time. Each zone or small group of zones runs as one layer. Blizzard is reconsidering world boundaries because layering sometimes made players disappear from each other’s worlds. Resendez cited reports of people inside Orgrimmar looking at the Barrens and seeing others vanish.

When the game launches, layering should look much like the final beta, and serious cases of groups vanishing or reappearing should already be fixed.

How the game looks on launch day may differ greatly from how it looks one month later, when large battles in cities are expected to begin. Blizzard is removing automatic world refreshes when players join a group. Instead, players get a pop-up and can choose when they are ready.

Blizzard is keeping an emergency lever to bring rule sets together later if populations cannot sustain themselves. The option includes linked auction houses or grouped instanced content and is a last resort. Blizzard changed its mind and will add an RP-PvP server after originally planning to leave it out. The studio cited concerns about splitting communities and population sustainability.

Blizzard wants to keep part of original WoW intact by holding rule sets apart at launch. Blizzard’s internal team disagreed on mixing PvE and PvP players. They once discussed letting them group for instanced content, with some supporting the idea and others strongly opposed. Josh Greenfield put it this way:

At one point we were talking about letting PvE and PvP people group for instanced content.

Auction houses and trade stay separate between rule sets because farming is easier on a PvE server. Blizzard is cautious about explaining layering technology in detail because that could give players ammunition to find exploits or strange edge cases.

WoW Forever stands as a separate third pillar of the Warcraft MMO, alongside several versions of Classic and the modern game. Nora Mills described it as a third pillar of World of Warcraft at BlizzCon 2026. She said it builds on the foundation of the original game and has its own identity.

Definitely, it serves as a third pillar of World of Warcraft.

Ana Resendez unveiled the realmless approach at the BlizzCon 2026 Deep Dive panel. She said players tend to crowd onto mega realms. Resendez recalled rolling on Drakkari with friends and later finding others on Ragnaros, but an alt there was not the same. She used that to show how Classic players crowded onto large realms with long queues.

We’re not putting everyone in one giant realm.

The beta ended a little over one week before Nov. 4. Blizzard is nerfing Mage and Druid ahead of launch. Mages lose the Frost Blast spell, and Feral Druid loses Berserk. Players can play Undead Paladins for the first time in WoW Forever.

Forever is also the first time that fans can play Undead Paladins ever.

Greenfield said Forever will not get housing. Williams praised the housing team, and the team reused under-the-hood technical improvements from that work. Blizzard will focus on support and community play during the week of Nov. 4, so the Countdown to Classic podcast will not air then. It should return the following week.

Blizzard is not planning a feature that lets players make someone they dislike go away forever. An ignore list will not necessarily remove someone from a player’s ecosystem.

Every tier, Blizzard plans to provide raiding for groups of ten and 20 players. The studio is also expanding the world horizontally to fill gaps in the leveling journey. An 80 to 120 player party or alliance of groups remains on the ideas table, but Blizzard has made no announcements.

Hardcore is coming after launch and will make WoW Forever an unsolved game. WoW Classic works as a time capsule with a solved meta. Blizzard has not yet said when Hardcore will arrive beyond post-launch. It is unclear how Familiar Faces picks who players encounter.

The PvP balance mechanisms are not set, and whether the language list will grow past three is unknown.
