The Bloodborne adaptation is an animated film with an R rating, produced by McLoughlin with PlayStation Productions and Lyrical Animation. The project was unveiled at CinemaCon in April 2026, with few details shared and no writer or director formally attached at that time. Sony started developing the adaptation just over a decade after Bloodborne came out in 2015, and McLoughlin said development has advanced significantly since then, with people now attached to bring the film to life. |…

According to McLoughlin, animation fits Bloodborne because its many otherworldly elements would be hard or impossible to capture in live action. He said the format lets the creative team push boundaries creatively rather than relying on a green screen. |…

McLoughlin said the film will not directly adapt the game’s story. He explained that he does not want to revisit the same characters and stories because movies are a passive medium, unlike interactive games. He wants to explore Bloodborne’s world with a new story rather than retelling the player’s journey through the Night of the Hunt. “I don’t want to adapt something if we’re just going to tell the same stories with the same characters over and over and over again.” |…

McLoughlin pointed to Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil and Prime Video’s Fallout as examples of recent adaptations that changed the game story instead of copying it directly. He noted that the Fallout series followed new characters not found in the games. He said he does not really ever want to take an IP and just redo the game story. “I don’t really ever want to take an IP and just redo the game story.” |…

McLoughlin said Bloodborne takes inspiration from H.P. Lovecraft and Bram Stoker and uses a Victorian England setting. He said that gives it a very different tone from Elden Ring, so the team wants to limit its influence from the Alex Garland-led film. He noted that Elden Ring’s bosses are relatively humanistic and easier to pull off in live action. Bloodborne’s eldritch-inspired foes suit animation better, he said. |…

A24 is producing the Elden Ring film with Alex Garland directing. Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman feature in undisclosed roles, and the theatrical release is set for March 3, 2028. The project carries a $200 million budget. McLoughlin said Bloodborne will release after this film so his team can watch it and consider what it did, including whether they are pursuing similar ideas.

Despite both being FromSoftware adaptations, the films take very different approaches, with Elden Ring live-action and Bloodborne animated, and McLoughlin wants to ensure their projects do not repeat the same things given the games’ different tones and settings. |…

McLoughlin said he believes the A24 Elden Ring film will not adapt all of George R.R. Martin’s co-written game because bringing it fully to the screen would cost $600 million. He described the production as involving a huge amount of time, effort, pieces moving, and financials, and questioned whether live action is a smart decision at that scale. |…

No full-length FromSoftware game adaptation has reached screens yet. The Elden Ring adaptation remains in post-production, and a Sekiro anime expansion arrives in January 2027. |…

FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is becoming an anime series titled Sekiro: No Defeat, produced by Qzil.la and directed by Kenichi Kutsuna. The theatrical cut opens in Japanese theaters on September 4, and an eight-episode series debuts globally on Crunchyroll in January 2027. This adaptation news appears alongside the Bloodborne and Elden Ring film projects as part of a wider push to bring FromSoftware properties to screen. |…

Bloodborne arrived on March 24, 2015. From Software developed it and Sony published it. The game puts the player in the role of a Hunter moving through the Victorian-era Gothic city of Yharnam. Only a small number of official releases have appeared in the ten years after 2015, mainly graphic novels and tabletop games.

PlayStation executives expressed uncertainty as recently as July about a PS5 remaster or sequel. |…

McLoughlin has a tattoo of the Hunter’s Mark from Bloodborne, reflecting his deep personal connection to the game as a fan. He said he feels pride in the work on the Bloodborne film, describing it as interesting and fun yet stressful because it involves a monumental IP. He said the team is striving for a pinprick-perfect result. “But I am proud of the work I’ve been doing on it.” |…

McLoughlin said he would be worried if the Bloodborne film had not secured a writer and director by this point, noting that animation takes a long time to produce and the team has been focused on getting the building blocks in place. He views the writer and director milestone as essential given the time-intensive nature of animation, and the team has dedicated itself to establishing foundational elements before moving larger pieces forward. |…
