Key facts
- The first unvaulting pass restores the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns along with their strikes, raids, and raid lairs, and it also restores the Menagerie activity with reprised rewards.
- The Destiny 'Legacy' anchor strongly suggests the original 2014 Destiny game, previously console-exclusive, is coming to PC.
- Marathon's roadmap includes an October Nightfall Refresh, the Symbiosis update due to launch in December 2026, and a larger evolution planned for March 2027.
- Restoring vaulted content requires reworking lighting, encounters, combatants, and underlying systems, not simply dropping old files into the current game, because everything has changed since Beyond Light.
Bungie reversed course on Destiny 2 in September 2026, declaring the game foundational to the studio’s future and promising to restore vaulted content and return Destiny to its original promise, and the studio says unvaulted campaigns will not be ready until 2028 at the earliest. The reversal came after Bungie released what was dubbed its final update for Destiny 2 in June 2026, then announced in September 2026 that plans had changed and the game would return. Studio Head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane made the commitment in a video and blog post published in mid-September 2026, and Bungie sent Destiny 2 off with Monuments of Triumph, billed at the time as the game’s final content update.
The unvaulting work started in June 2026 when the team assessed how feasible it would be to restore vaulted content, and the effort remains in pre-production expected to run until January or February 2027. Full production would then take about 12 months, so unvaulted campaigns will not be ready until 2028 at the earliest.
Pre-production focuses on ensuring the process works and hits the studio‘s quality bar, and Deane described the amount of content involved as a lot of content. Deane said unvaulting began as Bungie’s answer to real technical challenges but ultimately fragmented the player experience and broke faith with the community. Deane said time is not Bungie’s friend, that the studio is playing from behind with the cards it has, and that it will have to take more punches and make hard decisions along the way.
The first unvaulting pass restores the Red War, Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, and Warmind campaigns along with their strikes, raids, and raid lairs, and it also restores the Menagerie activity with reprised rewards. The pass will be available to all players and focuses on getting the campaign slate whole again by targeting campaigns, strikes, and raids from vaulted expansions.
The team includes Menagerie because it holds a special place in the team’s heart and the community has requested its return for years. GameRant says unvaulting traditionally offers easy access and rapid trust-building while larger projects develop behind the scenes.
Restoring vaulted content requires reworking lighting, encounters, combatants, and underlying systems rather than simply dropping old files into the current game, because everything has changed since Beyond Light. The Destiny Content Vault, introduced in 2020 with Beyond Light, removed Mars, Mercury, Io, the original Red War campaign, and raids such as Leviathan, and eventually swallowed every campaign up through Forsaken.
Bungie pitched the vault in 2020 as a way to rein in Destiny 2’s install size and make the game easier to keep updating. Torkan and Deane admitted that pulling vaulted experiences did long-term harm to the trust and enjoyment players got from Destiny. Deane said the hope for making Destiny 2 whole means restoring Destiny’s past, present, and future.
It means restoring Destiny's past, present, and future.

Bungie laid off around 292 roles in June 2026, most of them on the Destiny team, and GameRant reports the studio was reportedly cut by around half that month. Deane described the months leading up to the Moment of Triumph update as the most difficult time the studio had ever experienced, but he said the update had to be a battle cry rather than a funeral.
The community responded by sharing stories about memories in Destiny and petitioning against walking away from the universe, which Deane says inspired everyone. Bungie sent Destiny 2 off with Monuments of Triumph, billed at the time as the game’s final content update, and then announced in September 2026 that plans had changed and the game would return.
Bungie announced in mid-September 2026 that it would restore vaulted Destiny 2 content after previously releasing what was dubbed its final update in June, marking a reversal of the game’s planned finale. Bungie set four benchmarks: rebuild Destiny’s long-term future while restoring its past, make Marathon sustainable, share development priorities more openly, and communicate more steadily when plans change. The four commitments are the benchmarks the studio wants the community to use to hold it accountable as it rebuilds.
Bungie’s phased plan for Destiny’s future has three parts: a celebration that provides new updates, a Destiny Legacy component serving the whole experience where players play today, and a third redacted piece accompanied by the message Launch Ventrilo Message: We’re back. More details on all three parts are due around February 2027, and information on the Legacy anchor is due early next year.

The community update roadmap divides plans into a First Pass, Stretch Goals, and items probably not going to happen for technical and/or strategic reasons, with a progress bar. GameRant points to an older example: Bungie’s original Destiny 1 raid-related content pledge stalled out following Crota’s End in 2023.
The Destiny Legacy anchor strongly suggests the original 2014 Destiny game, once console-exclusive, is coming to PC, more than a decade after launch. Destiny 2’s Final Shape expansion brought an end to the 10-year Light and Darkness saga in 2024.
The original Destiny game has never come to PC and remains exclusive to consoles more than a decade after it launched. Deane said in a blog post that Destiny’s journey started over a decade ago and that the whole experience needs to reach players where they play today.
Our epic journey started over a decade ago, and the whole experience needs to be served to you all where you play today.

Marathon’s roadmap includes an October Nightfall Refresh, the Symbiosis update due to launch in December 2026, and a larger evolution planned for March 2027. Game Director Del Chafe III and Creative Director Julia Nardin laid out the roadmap shortly after the Destiny announcement, and GameRant says it was just days after the Destiny announcement. The Symbiosis update is due to launch in December 2026 while Bungie works on Destiny 2 unvaulting pre-production. Bungie’s own assessment is that Marathon did not reach as many players as it had hoped.
Josh Deane says the Destiny and Marathon player communities need to reconcile, noting that most of the Bungie team comes from the Destiny legacy and that Marathon must rapidly evolve and become sustainable to bridge the studio into the future. Vocal groups on both sides have vehemently expressed the belief that the other half is holding their preferred game back, and Deane called the current period formative for everyone at Bungie, one that will help determine the shape of the studio’s future.
It's important to know that this is a true reset moment for Bungie, Marathon, and Destiny.

Stretch goals under investigation include free roam destinations, seasonal activities from Sundial in season 9 to The Coil in season 32, weapon updates for raids and raid lairs, and PvP maps. These are being considered for either the unvaulting launch or sometime afterward. Updates to the New Light Experience and seasonal hubs are under consideration, but Deane warns they could come at a cost to what the studio wants to build for the future.
Bungie launched a new conversational update format hosted by Josh Deane and principal communications manager Dylan ‘dmg04’ Gafner, described as a general space for studio updates covering Destiny 2, Marathon, and broader Bungie news, not a weekly series. Gafner is Bungie’s Principal Communications Manager and co-hosted the Destiny 2 update with Head of Product Josh Deane.
Deane said Bungie will not make a Destiny announcement at The Game Awards 2026 or release a logo that generates major excitement right away, because the studio is still early in incubating its future. GameRant notes that Destiny 2 has struggled with feeling finished ever since The Witness fell. Bungie framed restoration as the first step to lay the foundation for how it reforges into new stories and games that players deserve.
all of this restoration is the first step to lay the foundation for how we reforge into new stories and games that you all deserve

A free fan-made mod called Project Sunrise launched in August 2026 and has been rebuilding vaulted Destiny 2 content, reaching a fully playable Tree of Probabilities strike. The project’s team celebrated Bungie’s unvaulting news as something close to the best possible outcome.
