Devolver Digital and Massive Monster said a new native edition of Cult of the Lamb will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026. Players who already own Cult of the Lamb on the original Nintendo Switch can move to the new edition without paying.
GameRant reports that players who own the Switch version will automatically receive the upgrade for free on October 22, 2026, without a separate purchase. ComicBook.com reports there is no indication the offer is limited-time and calls the upgrade path permanent.
New buyers will pay the same price on Nintendo Switch 2 as on the original Nintendo Switch. The price parity accompanied the free upgrade path and the October 22, 2026 release date in the announcement.
Instead of a straight port, the Switch 2 edition brings enhanced resolution, better frame rates, and new Nintendo Switch 2 features. The original Switch release locked the game to 30 frames per second, while other platforms ran at 60, and a later 60fps mode cut visual clarity. KitGuru expects the Switch 2 release to hold at least 60 frames per second and run at much higher resolutions in docked and handheld modes. KitGuru notes that base-camp performance issues can still occur depending on the number of followers.
Charging for a move from Nintendo Switch to Nintendo Switch 2 is common among developers and publishers, and some provide no upgrade path at all. GameRant argued on October 19, 2026 that Nintendo keeps premium pricing for first-party games while the free indie upgrade makes bigger studios look like they are charging for small improvements.
The outlet described it as frustrating when a game under $20 gets repackaged for more than $50 with improvements that could have been patched at no cost. On October 19, 2026, GameRant also cited CD Projekt Red’s free remaster for The Witcher 3 as an illustration of a major free upgrade for players who already own the game. GameRant says the studio could have charged a premium for the gameplay and quality-of-life improvements.
GameRant said on October 19, 2026 that the free upgrade may help Massive Monster’s reputation and drive added expansion and DLC sales among new Switch 2 owners. The outlet noted that the Woolhaven expansion came out earlier in 2026 and that using Switch 2 improvements with it means purchasing the DLC and the new edition. GameRant argues that current players matter and that no split exists in the player base.
Massive Monster developed the 2022 roguelike Cult of the Lamb, and Devolver Digital published it. Players lead a lamb saved by a stranger from annihilation, found a cult, gather followers, and aim to become the only true cult. Players construct buildings by collecting supplies and performing rituals to please deities, lead sermons to win followers, and fight non-believers in action combat.
In the gameplay loop, players train their flock, send them on missions, cleanse non-believers, spread enlightenment, and carry out rituals to rise as the mighty lamb god. Finishing the main story takes roughly 15 to 20 hours based on side content, and those who complete everything need about 30 hours.
At launch, the game posted a Metacritic score of 79 to 88 and collected multiple award nominations and wins. The accolades include Game of the Year at the Australian Game Developer Awards and Best Indie Game at the Golden Joystick Awards, along with nominations for Best Independent Game at The Game Awards and Best Game at the British Academy Games Awards.
Before Cult of the Lamb, Massive Monster put out Never Give Up in 2019 and The Adventure Pals in 2018 before Cult of the Lamb. Vooks describes the studio as Aussie developers. KitGuru states the soundtrack was composed by the late River Boy.
The game is also available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Massive Monster revealed the Switch 2 edition in a brief trailer and confirmed it launches on October 22, 2026.
ComicBook.com says a 2010s Square Enix game is also getting a free Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade alongside Cult of the Lamb, but the outlet does not name the title. ComicBook.com notes a similar free upgrade offer exists for a former winner of the 2021 Game of the Year, without naming that game. Vooks tells Square Enix directly that giving free updates is not too hard.
