Key facts

  • Asteroid damage in version 2.1 is determined by the asteroid's remaining health rather than its speed.
  • Wube's official blog marks exactly two years since the Space Age release at the time of the 2.1 stable launch.
  • The space platform hub requests can be controlled with the circuit network.
  • A diagonal flamethrower turret is now available.

Wube Software released Factorio version 2.1 on the stable branch on Oct. 23, 2026, calling it the final major content update for the PC factory-building game.

Wube Software said version 2.1 ends active major development and that the team will shift toward new game prototypes and experiments. The studio will continue providing bug fixes and support-level updates, focusing on technical maintenance, hardware compatibility, and modding tools. Rock Paper Shotgun reported that Wube described the release as “the things we wanted to do for 2.0 but didn’t have time for,” and Wube updated the classic Factorio trailer one last time with the 2.1 stable release.

Version 2.1 adds more than 30 quality-of-life improvements and minor features for the base game and Space Age expansion, built around quality of life, engine and performance work, and long-term modding support. Space Age can now be played without the Quality mechanic because the Recycler has been separated into its own mod. The update spent summer 2026 in experimental before reaching stable, marking exactly two years since the Space Age release, and it includes no new planets, enemy factions, or major production layers comparable to Space Age.

Wube reworked space logistics, so rockets can carry different items in a single launch and space platforms can request items from all locations when players leave the “Import from” slot blank. Platforms can trade with other platforms in orbit, and circuit network users can control hub requests. Radar Universe mode sends and receives circuit signals between planets and platforms on a shared channel.

The space platform hub has more health and resistances, platform drag is based on mass rather than width, and the landing pad unloading bay is a 4×5-tile cargo bay that inserters can empty directly into trains, chests, belts, or anything inserters can interact with. Elevated rails can now be built over cargo bays. Asteroid damage is determined by the asteroid’s remaining health rather than its speed.

Players can now direct circuit network reads and writes to different wire colors, replacing the old self-subtraction behavior. Labs can set current research based on circuit conditions, and boilers and heat exchangers can connect to the network for backup power setups. Land mines can work as tripwires and enemy detectors, and pipes can connect to the circuit network with a new pipe GUI. Entities connected to the circuit network can toggle whether to input and output to green and/or red wire channels.

Pipes can read contents, pipeline status, or fluid temperature, while labs and biolabs can read research costs and levels and research technology on a condition. Quality locomotives and wagons provide faster trains, bigger cargo wagons, and fluid wagons, with cargo wagons holding up to 100 item stacks and fluid wagons holding up to 125,000 units of fluid. Players can no longer use quality modules in asteroid reprocessing. The upgrade planner works on locomotives and train wagons, and a train marked for upgrade waits at its current stop until the upgrade is complete, overriding wait conditions.

Players can flip pumpjacks and burner miners, and flipping inserters, mining drills, and the Recycler changes which side of a transport belt the inserter drops to when the belt travels perpendicular to the entity. Inserters always drop to the input side of splitters. The drop arrow shows which lane of a belt a machine will drop to, and flipping blueprints will not change their behavior. Fluid mixing prevention is back, so pipelines with different fluids will not merge and instead give a warning, and fluid flow scales properly with high throughput.

Pumps can load or unload fluid from fluid wagons on a curve and transfer fluids between two adjacent fluid wagons. Expansion groups now scale with evolution, exploring the map early no longer reduces expansions near a base, and biters choose more natural locations for new bases.

Version 2.1 adds new models for assembling machines, oil refinery, rocket silo, and heat exchanger, along with a diagonal flamethrower turret and planets visible in the background of space platforms. A new pump rendering system can connect to fluid wagons. Environmental graphics for Space Age planets have improved, and the Demolishers on Vulcanus have a slightly more intimidating model. Factorio now runs natively on ARM64 Linux, supporting Steam Frame, Raspberry Pi headless servers, Asahi Linux on Apple Silicon MacBooks, and Oracle free VPS instances.

Wube recommends backing up saves and blueprints before updating because version 2.0 save games will load in 2.1, but some changes such as the circuit Input/Output split may break existing factory designs. Blueprints and save games cannot be downgraded to version 2.0 after updating. Most popular mods were updated during the experimental period, but some mods players rely on may not be ready yet.

Factorio began with a public alpha in 2012, was formalized under Wube Software in 2014, and arrived on Steam Early Access in 2016. The game’s four years of early access made it the de facto basis for later automation-builders such as Satisfactory and Dyson Sphere Program. Factorio reached version 1.0 in 2020, and Wube continued post-launch updates rather than treating 1.0 as a finish line.

Console and handheld ports brought Factorio to Switch and later Switch 2, each receiving optimization passes. Wube raised the base price once and has otherwise relied on up-front purchases rather than drip-fed paid cosmetics. Space Age was released in 2024 as a premium expansion. Factorio has a mountain of positive Steam reviews and a fiercely loyal playerbase.

Support mode means bug fixes continue decoupled from sweeping balance changes, and platform updates keep the game playable on new Windows, macOS, Linux, and console versions. Wube is investing in modding APIs so the community can act as an unofficial new-content department while Wube retains core tech responsibility. Lead developer Kovarex plans to add new achievements that could make a 100% run even more convoluted, possibly including a special achievement for getting all other achievements in a single playthrough.
